50mm Wormbox: Identify, Replace, Service

  • Maxwell stocks the three current 50mm gearboxes P100900, P102730 and P12436; other models need a retrofit kit. Where several ratios share one body, the ratio is stamped on the gearbox body or engraved on the wormwheel hub.
  • Current (outsourced) gearboxes have the 4 × M6 cap screws holding the two halves fitted from above (heads on the top side); the earlier Maxwell-assembled ones had them fitted from below, recessed into the body.
  • Where gears are needed, only a complete replacement gearbox is supplied. With no service these gearboxes are prone to fail after around 5 years.
  • Corroded output shaft seal housing: replace the gearbox top – kit P101633 (800 & 1200 100TDC) or P101624 (1000, 1500, Freedom, RC8, RC10). On gearboxes built before 2010 (cap screws from below) fit the longer cap screws and nuts supplied, as the new tops are not threaded.
  • Bearings: sintered bronze bushes, nominal 40.05 ± 0.05mm, available individually (3145); deep groove bearings as kit P90007 with circlips. The three lip seals come as kit P90006 with sight glass and O-ring. Use a service tool or sleeve to fit the input shaft seal so the drive slot does not damage it.
  • Oil: approximately 75ml; fill to just cover the top of the wormwheel teeth with the gearbox level (1/2 – 3/4 on the sight glass).
  • All current 50mm-wormbox windlasses except the HRC10 fix gearbox to spacer tube with a castellation; on the discontinued 800, 1200 and pre-2007 500 models the spacer tube was part of the gearbox (spacer tubes still stocked). In 2007 the castellation on the gearbox top moved, rotating the assembled position by 15° – only a problem in very tight spaces.

Gear Oil Type & Quantities

  • Maxwell fills with Castrol Alpha SP320, an industrial gear oil of ISO weight 320, usually sold only in 20 liter drums.
  • Any SAE gear oil of 90 to 110 weight can replace it (gear oil grades differ from motor oil grades: 90wt gear oil is not 90wt motor oil).
  • Ideally use a sulphur-free oil, since sulphur corrodes the bronze wormwheel; otherwise prefer API GL2 – 4 over GL5, which carries about double the additive concentration. Avoid GL5.

Unipoint Motor Service

  • Used on Anchormax and RC6: brushes act axially, so the end cap springs apart when the through bolts come out – keep the springs.
  • Gaskets SP2931 and end cap SP2932 are common to the Unipoint range; brushes come only within SP2932.
  • Replace the motor if the armature windings or insulation are burnt; check the magnets are intact and bonded, no leads touch the body, insulators are not melted, and brushes are not worn (standard length 12.7mm).
  • Clean out carbon, lightly grease the front flange bearing, then fit the armature to the end cap first and hold it while fitting the housing; align the locking tabs and fit the through bolts.

Cima Motor Service

  • Only service normally needed: remove the brush end cover, blow out carbon dust and check/replace brushes.
  • Brush springs are not sold separately: replace the complete collector flange SP2965.
  • Terminals can shear below the outside nut if over-tightened, and terminal-to-field connections can break if the stud twists while tightening cables: repair by an auto electrician.

Serial Numbers

  • Every Maxwell windlass carries a serial number that dates its manufacture; on older units it is often the only positive ID.
  • Up to August 2000: 5-digit sequential (e.g. 57708). From August 2000: letter + 4 digits, the letter giving the year from A = 2000 (I and O omitted), e.g. B1680.
  • From 2010 (outsourced production) a parallel code of 3 letters + 4 digits: manufacturing facility, year (R = 2010, S = 2011…), two-month period (A = Jan/Feb, B = Mar/Apr…). E.g. BSD0313 = RC10-8, Jul/Aug 2011; BTA0044 = Anchormax, Jan/Feb 2012.
  • New Zealand-built units: stamped on the gearbox casting or a metal plate. RC6, RC8, RC10, Anchormax, HRCFF and HRC10 built offshore since 2010: a permanent 15×10mm adhesive label on the deckplate.

Chainwheel Identification

  • Measure the chain: pitch P matters most, then outside link width W2. Length outside the link = pitch + 2 × wire diameter; an 11-link length divided by 11 should equal the pitch (e.g. 267/11 = 24.27). An unusually long pitch for the wire diameter means stretched chain.
  • RC chainwheels accept a broader range of chain; horizontal windlasses need a closer pitch match than vertical ones.
  • Since 2009 all chainwheels have the chain counter magnet pre-fitted (RC: top half; all-chain wheels: lower half).
  • Traditional all-chain wheels carry a number in one pocket referring to the chain size (e.g. 058 = 3/8" G40 or 10mm EN818 grade L). The series is on the windlass label, or measure:
Series Part number Diameter Height
300, 500 3132/?? 100mm 32mm
800 3172/?? 127mm 42mm
1000, 1200, 1500 3173/?? 127mm 58mm
3500 3182/?? 175mm 80mm
3500 band brake 5437/?? 175mm 93mm

Wheels larger than 175mm belong to the SY range. RC chainwheels have a different number on each half and are ordered by assembly number.

Insulating gaskets isolate the deckplate from aluminium hulls; studs and fasteners must also be insulated with washers and/or spacers not supplied by Maxwell.

RC8 service grease points

  • Grease top and bottom faces, the shaft where the chainwheel turns, the clutch face and mating chainwheel surface; clean and grease (or anti-seize) the thread.
  • Silicone ‘O-ring’ grease on the bearing surface and quad ring seal. The lower clutch cone is pressed on: do not remove it.
  • Clear the gearbox drain slots and wash salt off the seal; thin coat of grease on the spacer-gearbox face (excess blocks the drain); anti-seize on key, keyway and gearbox bore; clean and protect the gearbox input and the motor.
  • Anti-seize: non copper based paste. Grease: lithium complex, NLGI No.1 to No.3 (wheel bearing grease).
