Mounting
- Centre the windlass fore and aft with a clear lead to the bow roller. Chain leads onto the top of the starboard gypsy, wraps about 100° and drops through the chain pipe.
- The gypsy centre line must be in the same plane as the chain lead. On a cambered or angled deck, fit a shaped mounting block.
- Mark from the template and drill 11 mm (7/16") holes for the 10 mm (3/8") deck bolts; mark the chain pipe at the same time.
- Bed base and block in sealant. On aluminium or steel hulls insulate with a non-conductive gasket, including bolts, nuts and washers below.
- Light or foam-sandwich decks: fit a plywood stiffener of at least 16 mm (5/8") with large washers.
- Grease all moving parts on assembly with a lithium / Teflon based grease.
Chain Pipe & Locker
- Align the stripper with the gypsy centre, wrap the chain through the pipe to position it, then drill and cut.
- With the optional Rope/Chain Management System, the peeler sits under the gypsy centre and the spring finger on top; check the stripper clears the turning gypsy.
- Minimum fall to the top of the stowed rode for HR 2500: 650 mm. Aim the chain at the centre of the locker.
- If the chain falls in a bad spot, a redirect tube at least 1 ½ times the chain width, as near vertical as possible, can move it.
Deck Template
The deck template (second download) is drawn at 1:1 on two A3 sheets: join them at the "Align sheets here" arrows, with BOW pointing forward. It shows the stud holes and the cut-outs for wiring and for hydraulic lines. The current revision adds the extra pair of holes needed only with the composite housing. Print at 100% and check the printed dimensions before drilling.

- Motor in this manual: HR 2500, 1200 W, 3 pole.
- A circuit breaker must be fitted to keep the warranty. It protects wiring and motor; do not use it as an isolator.
- Fit a separate isolating switch close to the battery or switches.
- Mount the solenoid upright, out of sea water and close to the motor.
- Deck switches to port, starboard or behind the windlass, where you can see the anchor coming aboard.
- Battery as close to the windlass as possible: undersized cable drops voltage and heats up.
Anchoring
-
Free-fall: handle on the clutch nut, turn anticlockwise to release; tighten clockwise to brake the chain.
-
Retrieving: tighten the clutch fully clockwise, remove the handle, then power up. If the anchor is buried, motor forward to break it out.
- At anchor, take the load on a chain stopper, bridle or snubber. Never use the windlass as a bollard.
- Mark the chain at 2 and 5 metres (6.5' and 16.5') from the anchor and ease the last two metres in.
- Never run the windlass stalled or overloaded.
Capstan, MORS & RCMS
-
Capstan: secure the rode (chain lock, gypsy lock or snubber), release the clutch, and the capstan turns on its own.
-
Manual override: engage the locking pawl in the gypsy, ease the clutch anticlockwise, then work the handle; the MOR pawl drives the gypsy and the locking pawl holds the load.
-
Rope finger tension: check at least yearly. Loosen the grub screw on the chain pipe, turn the pin clockwise with a screwdriver to tension, and re-tighten the grub screw.
Servicing
Routine
- The geardrive is factory-filled and sealed with long-life synthetic oil: no oil changes.
- Rinse with fresh water after every trip.
- Clean the clutch cones regularly and re-coat with a thin film of waterproof grease.
- Strip and grease yearly on pleasure boats, more often on work and charter boats. Use marine lithium or Teflon grease; never soap-based grease.
- Line: Muir runs 3-strand nylon treated with fabric softener; soak it in fresh water with fabric softener every 3 months.
Strip-Down
- Tools: clutch / manual recovery handle, 14 mm (9/16") socket with 3" extension, lithium / Teflon marine grease.
- Remove the hex screw, then the clutch nut (anticlockwise). Slide off the D-cone and gypsy.
- Grease the exposed main shaft and cone, or continue: remove the capstan screw and capstan, keeping the drive key.
- Slide the shaft part out and grease the bush bore and shaft.
- Grease the shaft / cone and gypsy bore, then reassemble in reverse.
Rope-to-chain splice: seize the rope 400 mm (16") from the end, pass the strands through 20 mm (3/4") of heat-shrink and the last link, shrink it, then back-splice with tapered tucks.
Troubleshooting
| Area |
Check |
| Electrical |
Breaker and isolator on; battery charged to 12 or 24 V; foot switch plunger contacting; solenoid clicking (low voltage, faulty solenoid or loose wire); wiring intact; then motor brushes. |
| Mechanical |
Clutch tightened to the gypsy with the handle; if line slips, increase finger spring tension. |
| Rope jam |
Slacken the clutch to free the line. Do not keep running with the anchor or chain jammed: line slipping in the gypsy damages it. |
| Hydraulic motor |
