Mounting

  1. Locate the windlass centrally fore and aft with an unhindered chain lead to the anchor roller. The chain leads onto the top of the starboard gypsy, wraps around 100° and falls below deck through the chain pipe (hawser). Leave room for the full swing of the manual/clutch handle.
  2. Gypsy centre line in the same plane as the chain lead from the bow roller; shaped mounting block on an angled or curved deck.
  3. Put a nylon or plywood pad (minimum 6mm) or nylon gasket (minimum 2mm) on the deck; mark and drill the deck bolt holes, chain cut-out and wiring cut-out from the template.
  4. Bed in waterproof sealant and tighten nuts and washers on the threaded studs under the deck; remove excess sealant. Insulate aluminium or steel hulls with a non-conductive nylon or plywood gasket, also below deck. Light or foam-sandwich deck: nylon or plywood stiffener of at least 16mm (5/8") with large diameter washers.
  5. Mount from above; from below fit washers and nut on each stud and tighten. Grease all moving parts with lithium/Teflon based grease.

Deck Template

  • HR 900 Compact deck template, scale 1:1 on A3: 3 holes ø10 for M8 studs, a chain cut-out and a wiring cut-out; the chain centre varies with chain size.
  • Print at 100% (no page scaling) and check a known dimension with a rule before drilling: the template has no scale bar.
  • Minimum fall: at least 300mm from the top of the stacked rode; lead the chain to the centre of the locker.
  • If the chain falls in the wrong place, fit a metal tube under the hawser, at least 1 ½ times the chain width and as vertical as possible.

Electrical

  • Circuit breaker must be fitted to keep the warranty; it is not an isolating switch. Isolating switch accessible, near battery or switches.
  • Deck switches to port, starboard or behind the windlass, reachable with foot or knee.
  • Single or dual direction; solenoid packages with toggle switch, hand pendant or Auto Anchor available.
  • Solenoid (required for deck switches): upright, minimal sea water exposure, close to the motor.
  • Incorrect wiring can cause failure and a fire hazard; the layout sketches in the manual are not wiring diagrams.
Distance battery to motor Cable size AWG Cable diameter
7 m (23') 25 mm² 3 8 mm (5/16")
9–17 m (30'–55') 35 mm² 2 10 mm (3/8")

Operating

  • Manual release: put the handle in the clutch drive bi-square and turn anti-clockwise; control the chain by tightening clockwise (clutch as a brake). Fully tighten to retrieve under power.
  • Before retrieving, tighten the clutch clockwise and remove the handle. If the anchor is buried, secure the line and motor forward to break it out.
  • At anchor use a chain stopper, bridle or snubber; never use the windlass as a mooring bollard.
  • Electric: DOWN reverses the motor and drops the anchor; release the switch to stop, or lower further by releasing the clutch.
  • Mark the rode at 2 and 5 metre (6.5' & 16.5') intervals and go slowly for the last few metres.
  • Muir 3-strand nylon line: soak in fresh water with fabric softener every 3 months. On a rope jam, slacken the clutch; never keep running with anchor or chain jammed.

Servicing

  1. Clutch handle in the bi-drive square, turn anti-clockwise to loosen, then unscrew the clutch nut anti-clockwise.
  2. Undo the 2 × M5 SHCS at the base of the peeler and remove it.
  3. Lift the finger and withdraw the D-cone and gypsy from the main shaft.
  4. Grease the exposed main shaft/cone and the gypsy bore.
  5. Replace damaged parts and reassemble in reverse order.
  • The rope/chain finger cannot be adjusted and does not need adjusting.
  • Gear drive sealed with long-life synthetic oil. Rinse with fresh water after every trip; strip and grease at least yearly (e.g. Shell Gadus S220), more often on work and charter boats.
  • Troubleshooting: breaker and isolator, battery 12 or 24 volts, foot switch, solenoid, wiring, motor brushes; mechanically the drive keys and the clutch tightness.

Warranty

  • 3 years for the first owner from the date of purchase; 1 year for charter or hire vessels; twelve months for electric motors/controls, hydraulic pumps/controls/valves, weather seals and commercial use.
  • Void if the vessel lies directly on the windlass without a chain stopper; a circuit breaker must be fitted. Register the product with its serial number.
