Motors

Model Motor size Motor type
VR/C 2500 1200 W 3 pole
VR/C 3500 1500 W 3 pole
VR/C 4000 2000 W 4 pole
Battery to motor Cable AWG Cable Ø
7 m (23') 50 mm² 1 8 mm (5/16")
9 – 17 m (30' – 55') 85 mm² 3/0 10 mm (3/8")

A circuit breaker must be fitted to keep the warranty. It is not an isolating switch: fit a separate isolator close to the battery.

Chain Locker Fall

Vertical model Minimum fall (top of pile)
VR/C 600 300 mm
VR/C 850 / 1250 / 2200 450 mm
VR/C 2500 / 3500 650 mm
VR/C 4000 800 mm

Measured from the underside of the deck to the top of the fully stowed, heaped rode. Lead the chain to the centre of the locker; a rode that falls against a bulkhead or the stem pyramids and jams.

Mounting

  • Locate the windlass centrally fore and aft with a clear lead to the bow roller. Chain leads onto the starboard side of the gypsy, wraps 180° and drops through the hawse pipe.
  • Gypsy centre height must be in the same plane as the chain lead from the bow roller. On a cambered or angled deck, make a shaped mounting block.
  • Mark and drill from the supplied template. Bed base plate, gasket and block in sealant; tighten nuts and washers on the studs below deck.
  • Aluminium or steel hulls: insulate the windlass with a non-conductive gasket, including bolts, nuts and washers below deck.
  • Light or foam-sandwich decks: fit a plywood stiffener of at least 16 mm (5/8") under the deck, with large washers.
  • Fit the adaptor with the cap screws, grease shaft and key, slide the geardrive on and bolt it through the adaptor. The gearbox and motor can sit in one of 22 positions.

Hints & Electrics

  • Most common mistake: windlass too far forward or too close to the bulkhead.
  • If the chain falls in the wrong place, fit a metal tube under the hawse pipe at least 1 1/2 times the chain diameter, as vertical as possible.
  • If the motor sits below the chain access hole, fit a chain pipe extension (guide pipe) so chain cannot pile on the motor.
  • Solenoid upright, close to the motor, in a dry area: never in the chain locker.
  • Place deck switches to port, starboard or directly aft of the windlass, reachable by foot or knee, with a view of the anchor coming aboard.
  • Grease all mating surfaces; protect motor, gearbox and adaptor with Tectyl underbody film and Denso grease tape.

Deck Template (VRC2500-4000DT)

  • Right-hand deck template drawn at 1:1 on A3: four Ø13.5 mm (17/32") stud holes, the Ø82 mm (3 1/4") cut-out, the chain cut-out toward the chain locker, and a Ø20 mm hole for the Auto Anchor sensor (when fitted).
  • Print the PDF with page scaling set to "None" or 100%, check the printed size against the 200 mm scale bar, and check it with the windlass in position before drilling.

Operation

Clutch and Rode

  • Free fall: handle in the Bi-square on top, release the clutch anti-clockwise; control the run by turning clockwise to brake.
  • Retrieve: tighten the clutch clockwise, then remove the handle. If the anchor is buried, motor forward to break it out.
  • Capstan (VRC): secure the rode with a chain lock, gypsy lock or snubber, release the clutch, then drive the capstan electrically or with the handle in the off-centre Bi-square.
  • At anchor, take the load on a chain stopper, bridle or snubber: never use the windlass as a bollard.
  • Mark the chain at 2 and 5 m (6.5' and 16.5') from the anchor and bring the last two metres in gently.

MOS and MORS

  • MOS: a special handle fits the top of the gypsy once the capstan or clutch top is removed.
  • MORS: manual recovery without electrics. With the ratchet pawls engaged, tighten the clutch nut, put the handle in the offset Bi-square and work it; the gearbox and ratchet pawls hold the load on the return stroke.
  • Left-hand windlasses turn the opposite way.
  • Muir ships the ratchet pawl assembly disengaged. To engage, strip to the drive shaft and move the pawls to the adjacent slots with their springs (slots "B"); slots "A" give fixed drive.

Servicing & Maintenance

Gypsy Strip-Down

  • Tools: clutch handle, Allen keys, small and large flat screwdrivers, lithium/Teflon marine grease.
  • VR: remove the clutch nut, then slide off the D washer. VRC: remove the clutch nut, then slide the capstan off without losing the key.
  • Remove the thumb screw and socket-head screw to take off the chain cover, then the stripper and the peeler.
  • Lift off the gypsy. Grease the main shaft cone and gypsy bore before reassembly.
  • VRC models: grease the main drive shaft through the nipple on the aft side of the base plate.
  • Gearbox is factory filled with long-life synthetic oil and does not need changing. Do not use soap-based grease.

Schedule

When Do
6 months Check all bolts; check grease tape / anti-corrosion film on motor and geardrive
12 months, 2 and 3 years Remove chain wheel, clean cones, fully grease
4 years Full windlass service

Charter and work boats: strip and grease more often than the yearly service recommended for pleasure vessels.

Rope Chain Management System (RCMS)

  • If nylon line slips in the gypsy, raise the finger spring tension: remove the chain cover, loosen the grub screw on the side of the base, turn the screwdriver clockwise, then retighten the grub screw.
  • Muir windlasses are designed for 3-strand nylon treated with fabric softener; soak the rope in fresh water with fabric softener every 3 months.
  • Rope-to-chain splice: seize 400 mm (16") from the end, pass the strands through the last link with 20 mm (3/4") of heat-shrink sleeve, then back-splice two full tucks before tapering.

Electrical

  • Circuit breaker set and isolator on.
  • Battery charged to 12 or 24 V.
  • Foot switch plunger making contact.
  • Solenoid clicking: low voltage, faulty solenoid or a loose wire.
  • Wiring between controls, solenoid and motor intact.
  • Motor still dead: check the brushes for wear or sticking.

Mechanical

  • Clutch above the gypsy tightened with the handle.
  • Line slipping: increase finger spring tension (RCMS).
  • Check the drive key between main shaft and gearbox output.
  • Check the drive key between gearbox and motor input.
  • Hydraulic motor problems: refer to a Muir service agent.

Spare Parts

The manual has 12 exploded views: VR2500, VR2500M, VR2500 MORS, VR2500 MORS LH, VR4000, VR4000L, VRC2500, VRC2500M, VRC2500 MORS, VRC2500 MORS LH, VRC4000 and VRC4000L (drawings K08-ATLVR2500 to K08-ATLVRC4000L). The gypsy and the motor/gearbox assembly carry no part number in these lists.
