  • Warranty: 10 (ten) years from the date of purchase against parts and materials (conditions in the manual).

Preparation, Locking Devices & Lower Fittings

Before you start

  • Remove the forestay and assemble on a clean, level surface. Have the forestay checked by an accredited/skilled person: recommended forestay life is about 10 years (6 years in Australia).
  • Existing forestay: mark the turnbuckle (or adjustment plates) setting before removing it. New forestay: fit it first and mark the setting.
  • Temporarily fit the drum mechanism (with long link plates and/or turnbuckle cylinder if any) without extrusions to check its height above the stem head chain plate and that all parts fit; measure to the lower end of the top swage terminal; then dis-assemble and start the permanent assembly.
  • Check the forestay lower terminal against the inner dimensions of the drum mechanism. Ball and T upper terminals need modification (ball-eye terminal, or new stay attachment with toggle swage terminal).
  • Cutting long link plates: use the punch marks, mark at the drum height, drill 14,3 mm (9/16'') on C480, C520, C530, R480, cut 15 mm minimum under the hole and trim smooth; passivate after drilling or cutting.

Locking devices (same for all models)

  • The locking devices attach the drum mechanism to the bottom of the forestay; the same system is used whether the fitting is close to the deck or with long link plates.
  • Check that the stainless steel bushes are in the locking devices and the nylock nuts in the counter locking devices.
  • Close to the deck: fit the double jaw toggle, pin and bushes on the forestay terminal, fit the two counter locking halves on the pin, slide everything into the drum mechanism with each pin end in its slot, then place each locking device and tighten it with the M6 (TRHC) screws into the nylock nut of the counter locking device.
  • With turnbuckle (and turnbuckle cylinder option): pass the forestay through the extrusions, fit the turnbuckle terminal with the double jaw toggle on the threaded pin, add bushes if necessary and the counter locking halves, assemble the turnbuckle to the rigger's or manufacturer's specifications and slide it into the drum mechanism.
  • Long link plates: do not remove the insulating adhesive on the plates. Fit the threaded pin and toggle in the terminal eye, the plates on the pin with bushes and nylock nuts, and slide the plates into the slots of the drum mechanism without damaging the insulation.

Assembly Sequence

  1. Turnbuckle cylinder option: remove the screws and the shape adapter, fit the stop screws and the shape adapter to the top of the cylinder, fit the cylinder into the drum mechanism and fit the nippled screws. The inside of the cylinder must be perfectly clean. Unscrew the drum without taking the screws out of the flanges and open the flanges to reach the lower screw.
  2. Cutting the extrusions: with the drum mechanism on the stay, measure L; total length of extrusions G = L + 45 mm / + 1 49/64'' for C480, C520, C530 and R480. Mark, cut with a metal saw, trim smooth, then dismantle the drum mechanism.
  3. Upper bearing holder (slot near its end): stop washer in the slot, stop screw in the luff groove and tightened; slide the top extrusion up the stay, fit the 1/2 bearings round the wire, turn the bearing 1/4 turn and push the holder in up to the slot.
  4. Joints: bearing and joining bearing holder on the stay, into the extrusion until it stops, next extrusion on. Apply the adhesive sealant supplied at the threaded hole and tighten the set screws between 4 and 5 N.m (35–44 lbf.in; 44 lbf.in max). C520/C530 only: 1 short and 1 long bearing holder per joint – slide the short one in, fit the next extrusion, then slide the long one in pushing the short one.
  5. Lower extrusion: 1/2 bearing and 1/2 lower bearing holder in until they stop, the second pair round the wire, sealant, then both nippled screws.
  6. Halyard swivel onto the extrusions the way shown, with its 2 shackles.
  7. Drum mechanism: clean cylinder; holes T1, T2, T3 on line with the lower extrusion holes; tighten T3 first keeping T1 and T2 aligned; glue (delivered) on the lower extrusion stop screws.
  8. Wrapstop: measure the stay wire Ø, drill the Wrapstop at Ø minus 1 mm (3/64''), fit and tighten it against the swage terminal with the large diameter facing forward; check it before re-attaching the stay to the mast head. Don't install in strong winds, don't over-bend the extrusions, check grub screws.
  9. Turnbuckle adjustment (cylinder or long link plates): unscrew the TRHC screws of the locking devices to remove them, unscrew the turnbuckle cylinder screws and slide the drum mechanism up. Secure the whole extrusion train so it can't fall onto the turnbuckle. Adjust and secure the turnbuckle, then reassemble in reverse order.

Furling Line, Sail & Use

Furling line & sail

  • The furling line is fitted without dismantling the drum: pass it through the attachment point on the drum hub and tie a figure-eight knot. Never pass the line between the two drum cages.
  • Fill the drum by turning it by hand so the sail's UV strip is outwards when furled; first leading block (not supplied) at 90° to mid-height of the drum. Tip: run the line on the same side as the chain locker hatch hinges.
  • Feeder: Velcro® webbing in the 1st slot, feeder on the lower extrusion opening downwards, webbing round the extrusion through the 2nd slot and tightened. Remove it once the sail is hoisted and keep it on board.
  • Hoisting: halyard on the top swivel shackle, sail head on the bottom one, tack on the furler tack shackle. With a backstay, tension the halyard AFTER the backstay. Webbing on head and tack is recommended.

Swivel position & care

  • 5 to 10 cm (2 to 4'') between the top of the halyard swivel and the top of the extrusions with the halyard tensioned; allow for permanent sail stretch and never let the swivel go above the extrusions.
  • Reef/furl with slight drag on the sheet (move the genoa cars forward when reefing); unfurl with drag on the furling line. Never unfurl without controlling the furling line.
  • Maintenance: rinse with fresh water; never use WD 40® (or similar) on the seals in the drum or halyard swivel.
  • Adhesive sealant / threadlocker (part # 52225): irritating to eyes and respiratory system; use above 5°c in dry weather, parts at or above ambient temperature, 24h polymerisation recommended.
  • Owner checks: luff length, locking devices secured, all screws tightened, halyard tight, Wrapstop installed, clevis pin diameter correct for the forestay terminal.

Troubleshooting

Problem Cause Solution
System not rotating Halyard swivel badly adjusted; halyard wrapped around luff extrusions Adjust the halyard swivel; adjust the Wrapstop.
System hard to turn Furling blocks too small Fit larger furling blocks.
Furling line jams the drum mechanism 1st furling block badly positioned Trim position of the 1st furling block.
Too large a diameter with furling line Fit a thinner furling line.
Overfilled drum Furl the sail tighter and remove extra furling line coils.
Wrong direction of furling line through drum cage Change direction of furling line through drum cage.
