Technical Data

Model code: AL3 + gearbox (P = technopolymer, none = aluminium) + power (07/10/15) + voltage (12/24) + D for the drum version. AL3 P covers the 700 W and 1000 W; the 1500 W has the aluminium gearbox.

(4) DC-specific delayed breaker (thermal-magnetic or hydraulic-magnetic). (5) Longer shafts and studs are available on request for thicker decks.

Gypsy Chain Rope
8 mm – 5/16" 8 mm DIN 766, 8 mm ISO, 5/16" G4, 5/16" BBB 1/2" (12,7 mm) – 9/16" (14,2 mm) – 5/8" (15,8 mm)
10 mm – 3/8" 10 mm ISO (P.30), 3/8" G4 5/8" (15,8 mm)

Rope sizes apply to rope-chain rodes made to the Quick system; other rode types are not guaranteed.

Before You Drill

  • In the box: windlass (top + gearmotor), contactor box, base gasket, lever, screws, manual anchor-weighing insert (no-drum version), drilling template.
  • Tools: drill with ø 9 mm (23/64") and ø 11 mm (7/16") bits, 75 mm (2"7/8) hole saw, 13 mm hex wrench.
  • Align the gypsy with the bow roller. Chain may rise up to 10° towards the roller; a steep downward lead fouls the base.
  • Deck faces as parallel as possible (shim if not): misalignment costs motor power. Deck thickness within the table range.
  • Nothing must obstruct cables, rope and chain below deck; a shallow chain locker causes jams. Up to 5° positive chain tilt to the deck.

Fitting

  • Drill using the template supplied.
  • Clean up the rope/chain hole and seal and smooth it (marine paint, epoxy resin or gel) so the chain runs freely.
  • Fit the top with the gasket between deck and base, engage the shaft in the gearbox and secure the nuts on the studs (washer, grower, nut).
  • Run the supply cables from the windlass to the reversing contactor unit.
  • 700 W / 1000 W: the gearbox flange can be fitted either side (mode 1 or 2) by undoing screws C and D and turning the gearbox 180°; overall size stays 141,5 mm max.
  • The motorgearbox can be rotated in 45° steps relative to the base.

Wiring

  • Contactor box T6315-12 (12V) or T6315-24 (24V).
  • Control fuse 4A (12V) or 2A (24V).
  • Cable section is chosen on the total length L = L1 + L2 + L3 + L4.
  • Compatible Quick controls: WCS 820, WCS B and WCS 830 control boards, HRC 1002 push-button panel, 900U / 900D foot switches, WCB breaker, CHC 1203, CHC 1103 and QNC CHC chain counters, RRC radio controls (R02 receiver, P02 and H02 transmitters).
  • Fit at least two controls so the windlass can still be worked if one fails. Keep the reversing contactor box out of the wet.

Operation

Anchoring

  • The clutch (B) links gypsy and main shaft (A). Handle (C) in the drum bush (D) or the gypsy cover (E): counter-clockwise releases, clockwise re-engages.
  • Weighing: engine running, clutch engaged, handle removed, press UP; watch the last metres to protect the bow.
  • Casting electrically: press DOWN for a controlled, even run-out.
  • Casting manually: release the clutch so the gypsy free-wheels; turning the handle counter-clockwise slows the chain (as printed).
  • Once anchored, take the load off the windlass with a chain stopper or a rope to a strong point. Never run the motor with the handle in the drum or gypsy cover.

Drum and Manual Recovery

  • Drum alone: engage the gypsy lock lever (H) with the control (F/G), release the clutch (at least 2 turns anticlockwise), remove the handle, take at least 3 turns on the drum and keep tension on the tail. Release the gypsy lock before weighing anchor.
  • Manual recovery, no-drum version: power off, engage the gypsy lock, release the clutch, put the lever in the gypsy cover seat and wind clockwise; then retighten the clutch and release the lock.
  • Manual recovery, drum version: power off, engage the gypsy lock, remove the drum, fit the manual anchor-weighing insert (I) with its screws and wind clockwise; refit the drum to tighten the clutch.
  • If the windlass stalls and the breaker has not tripped, wait a few seconds and try again; if it tripped, reset and wait a few minutes. Still stuck: motor the boat up to free the anchor.

Maintenance

  • Rinse salt deposits off with fresh water regularly.
  • Once a year strip the gypsy: drum version – loosen bush (7) with the handle, remove drum (6), top cone (11), stripper screws (10) and stripper (14), gypsy (12), bottom cone (13); no-drum version – remove clutch bush (2), screw (5) and gypsy cover (4), then as above.
  • Clean, then grease the shaft thread and the gypsy cone seats with marine grease.
  • Clean oxide off the motor and contactor terminals and grease them.
  • Disassembly of the gearmotor by qualified personnel only, and only when it is cold.
