Current after an initial period of use; speeds with a gypsy for 12/13 mm chain. Cable sizes are the minimum for a total run L<20 m: size up for longer runs. Breakers: DC, delayed-action (thermal-magnetic or hydraulic-magnetic). Shafts and studs for thicker decks on request. Rope values apply to the Quick rope/chain system only.

Before You Drill

  • In the box: windlass (deck unit + motorgearbox), contactor unit, base gasket, drill template, handle, fasteners, manual. Hydro: no contactor.
  • Tools: Ø 5 mm (3/16"), Ø 9 mm (23/64"), Ø 11 mm (7/16") and Ø 17 mm (1500W excluded) drills, Ø 80 mm (3" 9/64) hollow mill, 13 mm wrench.
  • Hydraulic version (as printed): Ø 12 mm (15/32") drill, Ø 90 mm (3"1/2) hollow mill, 17 mm wrench.
  • Recommended: RL control board (mod. 800), HRC1002 hand-held remote, foot switch (mod. 900), hydraulic-magnetic breaker, chain counter CHC1102M / CHC1202M, RRC radio (R02, P02, H02).
  • Align the gypsy with the bow roller; keep the deck faces parallel (lack of parallelism costs motor power); deck thickness within the table range.
  • No obstructions under deck for cables, rope and chain; a shallow peak causes jamming. The installation drawing shows 40 cm (16") below deck and a max 5 mm (3/16") gap.

Fitting

  1. Drill the four holes with the drilling template.
  2. Clear the chain passage and seal and smooth it (marine paint, gel coat or two-pack epoxy) so rope and chain run freely.
  3. Set the upper section with the gasket between deck and base, then fit the lower section, inserting the shaft into the reduction unit.
  4. Tighten the nuts on the fixing studs.
  5. Connect the supply cables to the contactor unit. Hydro: connect the hoses from the selector valve to the hydraulic motor flanges.
  6. The motorgearbox can be set at 45° / 90° positions.

Electrical System

  • DC models: contactor unit T6315-12 (12V) or T6315-24 (24V); L = L1 + L2 + L3 + L4 for cable sizing.
  • Control fuse 4A (12V) / 2A (24V).
  • 3000W AC: three-phase diagrams for 230V (fuses FU1 13-25A aM) and 400V (fuses FU1 8-16A aM), contactors KM1/KM2 with a 24V control battery.
  • Controls shown: HRC 1002 hand-held remote, 900U and 900D foot switches, control board mod. 800, chain counters CHC 1202 M and CHC1102 M, RRC radio (R02, P02, H02).
  • Mount the contactor unit where water cannot reach it. Keep flammable material out of the peak and away from the motor.

Operation

Weighing and Casting

  • Before weighing, check the gypsy lock control (38) is disengaged.
  • Clutch (10 and 12) links gypsy and shaft: handle (1) in the bush, counter-clockwise to disengage, clockwise to engage.
  • Weighing: engine on, clutch engaged, handle out, press UP; watch the last metres to protect the bow.
  • If it stops without tripping the breaker, wait a few seconds and retry; if the breaker trips, reset it and wait a few minutes; if still blocked, move the boat to free the anchor.
  • Casting: clutch disengaged for free fall, handle clockwise to slow the chain; or press DOWN for a controlled run-out.
  • At anchor, take the load on a chain stopper or a rope.

Manual Weighing and Drum Use

  • Manual, no drum: power off, engage the gypsy lock with control (38), disengage the clutch (at least 2 turns of the bush anticlockwise), lever (1) in the gypsy cover seat (4), turn clockwise to take up chain. Then refit the lever in the bush to tighten the clutch, remove it, release the lock and restore power.
  • Manual, drum version: power off, engage the gypsy lock, loosen bush (8) fully and pull off the drum (7), lever in the manual weighing seat (6), turn clockwise. Refit drum and bush, release the lock, restore power.
  • Drum: secure the anchor rode first; engage the gypsy lock on gypsy (11), release the clutch (at least 2 turns anticlockwise), remove the handle, wrap the rope on the drum and run the windlass keeping the tail under tension. Retighten the clutch clockwise when done.

Never run the motor with the handle in the drum or gypsy cover; isolate the motor when working by hand. The windlass is not designed for storm loads and must not be the only anchor securing device.

Maintenance

  • Power off; take the chain or rope off the gypsy and drum.
  • Wash salt deposits off with fresh water regularly.
  • Gypsy lock: the control (38) engages the lock (39) on the gypsy; disengage it before weighing.
  • Once a year, drum version: loosen bush (8) with the handle (1), pull off drum (7) and top clutch cone (10), remove screws (13) and stripper (14), pull off the gypsy (11).
  • No-drum version: loosen bush (2) and screws (5), remove gypsy cover (4) and top clutch cone (10), then screws (13), stripper (14) and gypsy (11).
  • Clean, then grease the shaft thread (23, 24, 25 or 26) and the clutch cone seats (10 and 12) with marine grease.
  • Clean and grease the motor and contactor terminals.

Drilling Template

  • The Dylan R4 drilling template (extra download, A3) shows the stud holes, the Ø80 chain hole and the bow direction, with a 100 mm / 4" check bar.
  • Print at 100% (no "fit to page") and measure the check bar before drilling.
