Technical Data

Model ECS 162 ECS 163 ECS 222 ECS 223
Number of outputs 2 3 2 3
Battery charger current (2) 120 A 120 A 180 A 180 A
Charge current from alternator (2) 160 A 160 A 220 A 220 A
Weight 1200 g 1250 g 1200 g 1250 g
  • Input voltage 5 ÷ 31 Vdc; voltage loss (1) < 0,26 Vdc (0,04 Vdc @ 20 A); reverse polarity protection; natural cooling; operating temperature –20 °C to +70 °C.
  • Dimensions: 195 x 68 x 135 mm (drawing: 195 (7 43/64), 68 (2 43/64), 135 (5 5/16), 190 (7 31/64), 95 (3 47/64), 44 (1 47/64)).
  • IG terminal to excite modern alternators. MOSFET technology: the charge is shared between batteries without damaging voltage drops.
  • (1) Typical values. (2) Total maximum current divided over the outputs.

The current manual covers the B versions of ECS 162 and 163; the older edition (non-B units) gives the same technical data.

Location

  • Dry, ventilated place, for fixed indoor installation. Horizontal or vertical; vertical is recommended for natural convection cooling.
  • Keep the unit (excluding its base) at least 5 cm (1" 31/32 in) from walls or objects; the mounting base must withstand at least 80 °C (176 °F).
  • The case is the heat sink and can get hot: let it cool before handling.
  • Distances for EMC: at least 25 cm from the compass, 50 cm from radio receivers, 2 m from radar beams.

Minimum Wire Section

Current Minimum cross section (1)
0 ÷ 40 A 25 mm2 (AWG 3)
40 ÷ 80 A 35 mm2 (AWG 2)
80 ÷ 120 A 50 mm2 (AWG 0)
120 ÷ 160 A 70 mm2 (AWG 00)
160 ÷ 220 A 95 mm2 (AWG 000)

(1) Wire working temperature 70 °C (158 °F). Use insulated terminals and keep wires as short as possible; undersized wires or loose terminals can overheat dangerously.

Connections

  1. Make sure no wire is live, and check battery polarity carefully.
  2. Charge source positive (alternator or battery charger) to +IN.
  3. Each battery or bank positive to an output; with two banks use + A OUT and + B OUT. Fuse each line as shown in the diagram.
  4. Charge source and battery negatives to the same bracket.
  5. With an alternator, connect the separator IG terminal to the alternator IG terminal: modern alternators need some voltage on their input to start charging.

Operation & Care

  • Charge sharing starts as soon as a running charge source is connected to the input; the green POWER LED lights.
  • If the POWER LED is off the unit works like a traditional diode separator (low efficiency, high heat); working this way can damage it.
  • Once a year check cables and connections. Clean with a soft cloth dampened with water; no chemical or abrasive products.
  • Tampering by unauthorized persons voids the guarantee.
