Electrical System

DC Models (1700/2300/3500 W)

  • Motor feed: battery → hydraulic-magnetic circuit breaker (see table) → contactor unit → motor (red and black cables). Cable size is for the total length L = L1 + L2 + L3.
  • Contactor units in the parts list: T6315-12 (12 V), T6315-24 (24 V), T6415-24 (24 V).
  • Control circuit fuse: 4 A (12 V), 2 A (24 V). Chain counter sensor cable: white and green.
  • Protect the motor with a fuse, thermal-magnetic or hydraulic-magnetic breaker rated for the motor; the breaker also isolates the control circuit.

AC Model (3000 W, three-phase)

  • 230 V AC system: line fuses FU1 13–25 A aM. 400 V AC system: FU1 8–16 A aM. Motor max 3 kW.
  • The three-phase diagrams show contactors KM1 and KM2, a 24 V battery on the control side and the motor terminal board (U, V, W).
  • Controls on this system include foot switches mod. 915C, the control board mod. 800 and the HRC1002 remote.
  • Recommended Quick accessories: RL control board (mod. 800), watertight hand-held remote HRC1002, foot switch (mod. 900), hydraulic-magnetic circuit breaker, chain counters CHC1102M and CHC1202M, RRC radio control (R02 receiver, P02/H02 transmitters).
  • Fit at least two controls, so the windlass can still be run if one is damaged. View HRC 1002 →

Before You Drill

  • In the box: windlass (or hydraulic windlass), handle, drill template, manual, warranty.
  • Tools: drill with Ø 13 mm (33/64") bit; Ø 43 mm (1" 11/16) and Ø 76 mm (2", as printed) hollow mills; 8 mm hex wrench.
  • Align the gypsy with the bow roller.
  • Upper and lower deck faces as parallel as possible; compensate if not, or the motor loses power.
  • No obstacles under deck for cables, rope and chain; the drawing shows at least 1 m (39" 3/8) of chain fall below deck. A shallow chain locker causes jamming.

Fitting Procedure

  • Drill four holes with the drilling template.
  • Open the chain passage, then finish and seal it (marine paint, gel coat or two-pack epoxy) so rope and chain run free.
  • Screw the studs into the base by their short threaded end, with medium-strength thread locker.
  • Lower the windlass from above deck and fix it with M12 stainless steel bolts and screws of suitable length.
  • Run silicone around the whole outside edge of the base for a better seal.
  • DC: connect the supply cables to the battery circuit. Hydro: connect the hoses from the selector valve (pressure input and tank) to the hydraulic motor flanges.

Operation

Clutch, Weighing and Casting

  • Clutch: cones (49, 41) link the gypsy (45) to the shaft (10 or 11). Handle (64) in the bush (54, BX version) or the drum bush (22, BD version): counter-clockwise releases, clockwise engages.
  • Before weighing or casting, check the band brake (59) is free and the gypsy lock screw (2) is fully screwed in.
  • Weighing: engine on, clutch engaged, handle removed, press UP. If the windlass stops and the breaker has not tripped, wait a few seconds and retry; if it trips, reset and wait a few minutes. If still blocked, move the boat to free the anchor.
  • Casting electrically: press DOWN.
  • Casting manually: screw in the band brake knob (61), release the clutch (54 or 22) with the handle, then unscrew the knob slowly to lower the chain; screw it back to stop. Re-lock the clutch. Loosen the knob again before running electrically. Keep clear of the chain.

Drum and Manual Recovery

  • Drum (20): anchors made fast first. Release the clutch at least 3 turns anticlockwise (54 on BX, 22 on BD), screw in the knob (61) to lock the gypsy, take at least 3 turns on the drum and run the windlass keeping the rope under tension. Double-gypsy version: release both clutches and screw up both band brakes.
  • Gypsy lock screws (2): one each side, on the drum or gypsy cover; the sticker shows clockwise to lock, anticlockwise to free the gypsy.
  • Manual weighing: hold the chain on a stopper and disconnect the power; unscrew the screw (2) of that side to its stop, without forcing; turn the handwheel (61) anticlockwise to free the band brake (59).
  • Unscrew the gypsy clutch (54, BX) or drum clutch (22, BD) at least 3 turns with the handle (64), put the handle in a hole of the mobile ring (50) and haul, using the ring as a ratchet.

Never run the motor with the handle in the drum or gypsy cover. At anchor, hold the chain on a stopper or bollard; under way, switch the breaker off and secure the chain. The windlass is not designed for storm loads.

Maintenance

  • Switch off the motor power first, then remove the chain or rope from the gypsy and the rope from the drum.
  • Wash salt deposits off with fresh water regularly.
  • Once a year, gypsy side: remove the screw (55), unscrew the clutch (54) with the handle (64), keeping the springs (52) and rings (51, 50) for correct refitting. Undo the screws (48), remove the stripper (47, 46), the cones (49, 41) and the gypsy (45).
  • Drum side: release the bush (22) with the handle and pull off the drum (20).
  • Drum on the gypsy side: remove the screw (55), unscrew the clutch (22), remove the drum (20), then the stripper, cones and gypsy as above.
  • Clean, then grease the shaft thread (10 or 11), the gypsy seats of the cones (49, 41) and the stripper screws (48) with marine grease.

Drill Template

The A3 drilling template (scale 1:1) for the HR5 1700 - 2300 - 3500 is in the downloads. It shows the four bolt holes, the chain pipes for chain line SX (left) and DX (right) and the bow direction. Print it at 100% and check it against the windlass base before drilling.
