- It switches the stabilizer on and off, turns precession on and off and shows status, roll and precession angle, connected over CAN-BUS. Several panels can work as master and slaves (multi-display, multi-gyro).
- In the box: R5 QNC touch 5" panel, protective cover, power and I/O cable (1 m / 3,28 ft), CAN BUS adapter cable (0,5 mt / 1,64 ft), J3 CAN BUS extension M/M (12 mt / 39,37 ft), CAN T 5P F/F/F connector, CAN terminator M, adhesive gasket, 2 fixing screws, 2 fixing brackets, drilling template, manual.
Mounting the Panel
- Choose a clean, flat spot the operator can reach easily, with rear access and space for the connectors; the back must stay dry. Drilling must not weaken the structure.
- Keep it at least 25 cm from the compass (printed "bush"), 50 cm from radio receivers, 1 m from radio transmitters and 2 m from the radar beam.
- Tape the drilling template in place (it is the last page of the manual: print at 100% and check the 100 mm / 4" scale bar). Drill four Ø 11.5 mm holes for the bushes and cut the central opening; deburr. An inaccurate cut spoils the gasket seal.
- Fit the adhesive gasket (not below 18°C) adhesive side up on the instrument, screw the 4 stud bolts into the bushes, fit the panel and secure from behind with shaped washers, growers and nuts. Panel up to 10 mm thick: washer flaps up; thicker than 10 mm: flaps down.
- Peel off the protective film at the end.
Electrical Connection
- Keep cables 1 m from radio cables (2 m from SSB).
- Fit an easily reached on/off switch and a 4A fast-blow fuse on the supply line; size cables for their length; do not power it from the engine starting batteries.
- CAN extensions must not exceed 100 meters in total. Push the female connectors on and tighten the ring nuts fully.
- Single panel: supply cable 9÷32 VDC, CAN BUS adapter, CAN T connector, CAN M/M extension to the inverter (J3), terminators as shown. Quick suggests cutting power to the display when the driver is not powered.
- Multi-display / multi-gyro: master and slave panels linked by Ethernet (an Ethernet switch 10/100 Mbps is needed for multi-gyro, not included).
- While under way with the flywheel at full speed, do not cut the power: it would interrupt the precession control. On a power cut both stabilizer and panel switch off after 5 seconds and restart with the initial settings when power returns.
Using the Panel
- At power-up the panel loads its programme (about 2 minutes – do not disconnect it), then touch the screen to reach HOME: status, flywheel speed percentage and natural / controlled precession angle.
- ON/OFF switches the stabilizer only. Precession can be used only with the stabilizer on: it switches on automatically at 80% speed and off below 50%; you can switch it off at any time, and for safety it switches back on automatically after 15 minutes.
- Status: OFF (flywheel may still turn below 35 rpm), READY, SPOOLING UP, HIGH SEAS (protection mode for sea state), SPOOLING DOWN.
- Eco mode (user): two levels that reduce generator load on 90–260 Vac gyros or extend battery time on 12 Vdc gyros, with a possible slight loss of performance; switching takes about 5 seconds. The R4-driver edition gives up to 20%.
- Safe mode (automatic, multi-gyro only): keeps the system running at reduced performance when one gyro, its panel or its driver fails, is off or is in a different state.
- Setup User: brightness, alarm buzzer, units, language, day/night. Service page: speed, DC bus voltage, power, bearing and inverter temperatures, working hours. Commissioning, Setup and Factory pages are for Quick personnel.
Alarms
A flashing red alarm icon opens the Active Alarms page (history can be scrolled). On these alarms precession stops and the flywheel slows to a stop while the panel stays on; it all restarts when the fault clears.
| Alarm | Problem | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Input voltage too low / PFC fault | Power supply issue | Shore / generator voltage: minimum higher than 90VAC or 200VAC depending on model |
| Input current too high | Motor current limit reached | Motor power cables, motor sensor calibration, or Quick Service |
| Motor current too high / Input overvoltage | Motor current regulation failed | Motor power cables, motor sensor calibration, or Quick Service |
| Start of the motor failed | The motor can't start | J1 cable, motor sensor calibration, or Quick Service |
| External enable input / Communication error | RC and driver can't communicate | Power on the driver; J3 cable |
| Can bus watchdog fault / Precession sensor fault | Internal error | Contact Quick Service |
| Driver fault | Driver doesn't work | Driver and its LED; repair/replace; Quick Service |
| Position sensor value out of range | Flywheel speed/position control failed | J1 cable, or Quick Service |
| Overtemperature inverter | Driver at maximum temperature (ambient >55°C) | Ambient temperature at the driver (driver must be installed vertically) |
| Overtemperature motor | Gyro bearing/motor at maximum temperature (ambient >55°C, bearing >90°C) | Ambient temperature at the gyro; bearing with bearing checker |
| Temperature limit | Gyro bearing/motor at maximum temperature (ambient >55°C, bearing >100°C) | Ambient temperature at the gyro; bearing with bearing checker |
Before any work, disconnect the stabilizer and make sure the flywheel has stopped completely: a spinning flywheel keeps generating current.
Maintenance & Technical Lockout
- Scheduled maintenance by authorised Quick personnel is mandatory after 1 year from activation or 1000 hours of bearing operation, whichever comes first; a pop-up warns from the 12th month or 900h. The wrench icon stays until the service is done.
- If it is not done the flywheel speed is reduced: 13th month / 900h warning only; 14th month / 1000h – 20% reduction; 15th month / 1050h – 70%; 16th month / 1100h – 100%, not running. Only a Quick service centre can restore it, and missed maintenance voids the warranty.
- The R4-driver edition lists bearing, inverter and precession checks every 1000 hours by Quick service.
- Clean without solvents or fuels; do not remove the safety labels.
