Quick PCC TJ1 Thruster Control — Installation & Use Manual

Overview & Technical Data

  • Compact proportional lever control for ONE Quick BT QSY or BTQ (with MSC) thruster on the "Q Centric" CAN bus network; control and thruster pair automatically at every power-up.
  • Works alongside compatible Mercury and Volvo Penta control systems through a Q NCG gateway; the PCC TJ1 always has priority over those OEM controls.
  • Lever, enable and HOLD buttons, two LEDs (enable, HOLD) and buzzer; firmware upgradeable via USB-C.
  • In the box: control, gasket, fixing screws, drilling template, manual.
Supply voltage 9÷32 VDC
Maximum absorption 100 mA (measured at 9 Vdc)
Operating temperature from -20 °C to +70 °C
Protection rating IP67
Interface / connector CAN bus, 5-pin male M12A
Weight 135 g
EMC EN 60945, FCC TITLE 47 PART15 SUBPART B

Mounting

  • Install after all carpentry work: fibreglass dust can jam the lever and is not covered by warranty.
  • Flat, smooth surface where the helmsman can see and reach it; back protected from water, rear access for service, min. 100 mm behind the panel for the cable bend.
  • At least 25 cm from the compass, 50 cm from radio receivers, 1 m from radio transmitters (except SSB), 2 m from SSB transmitters and from the radar beam path.
  1. Tape the drilling template in place; drill the 4 bush holes Ø 13 mm and the central opening with a Ø 62 mm hollow cutter. Remove burrs: a poor cut spoils the gasket seal.
  2. Fit the gasket and screw the 4 studs into the fixing bushes (no threadlocker or glue).
  3. Fit the instrument, then from below add 4 shaped washers, 4 grower washers and 4 nuts. Panel up to 10 mm thick: shaped-washer flaps up; over 10 mm: flaps down.
  4. Peel off the transparent protective film.

CAN Bus Connection

  • Plug the drop cable (max 5 m) into the control's male M12 connector, mind the key and tighten the ring nut; connect the other end to the CAN bus backbone (max 100 m).
  • Power the network from the SERVICE battery, 9÷32 VDC, through a switch and a 1A quick-acting fuse, and only after all connections have been checked.
  • Only ONE BT QSY thruster on the network. Wiring examples in the PDF: single control with BT QSY or BTQ (MSC), and with a Q NCG gateway.
  • Connector pins: + battery, - battery, CAN H, CAN L.

Using the Control

  • At power-up the control runs an LED test, then sits disabled (short slow flash of the enable LED).
  • Enable: lever centred, hold the enable button for at least 1s until the LED stays lit with a short beep. Not possible with the lever off-centre, another control enabled and in use, or a network fault.
  • Lever right/left moves the bow (or stern, for a stern thruster) right/left with proportional speed; short beep every second while running. A full reversal is delayed by the ramps; the boat carries way after you let go.
  • HOLD: hold the lever at the wanted speed, press HOLD for at least 3 seconds until the HOLD LED is steady, release and let the lever return (pressed over 6s it will not engage). Cancel with HOLD, the lever or the enable button; it stops by itself after 2 minutes. Never leave the helm with HOLD on.
  • Auto-disable after 6 minutes without commands; a tone of about one second confirms. Enabling a second control when the first is not in use takes over.
  • Buzzer off: with the control unpowered, hold enable while powering up for about 1 second (3 beeps, LED briefly blue). Repeat to switch it back on (1 long beep). Blocking errors always sound.
  • Reverse the thruster direction: with the control unpowered, hold HOLD while powering up for about 3 seconds (both LEDs orange), release; the enable LED turns green to confirm. Not available with BTQ thrusters with MSC.

Signals

Indication Problem What to do
Blue enable LED Control supply below 10.5 VDC for over one second Clears above 11.0 VDC; check the battery and wiring
HOLD + enable LEDs slow orange flash No thruster in the network Check thruster power and network wiring
HOLD + enable LEDs fast orange flash Two or more thrusters in the network Connect only one thruster
Enable LED orange, 1 / 2 / 3 flashes Low thruster supply / motor overtemperature / control electronics overtemperature Clears automatically
Enable LED orange, 4 / 5 / 6 flashes High input voltage / blocked fan / lack of input voltage See the MSC unit manual
BT QSY (HOLD LED 1 orange flash) – red flashes Problem
0 (permanent red, HOLD off) Motor control error – press enable to reset
1 / 2 Missing parameters / encoder faulty
3 to 7 Error 3 – Error 7 (motor management: contact Quick with the flash count)
8 / 9 Motor overtemperature / inverter overtemperature – let it cool
10 / 11 / 12 High current (short-circuit or overload) / supply overvoltage / insufficient supply voltage
BTQ with MSC (HOLD LED 2 orange flashes) – red flashes Problem
8 / 9 CW/CCW contactor command output not connected / faulty internal temperature sensor
10 / 11 Overload on CW/CCW contactor output / overload on line switch output
12 / 13 Both fans blocked / line switch command output not connected
14 / 15 Low motor absorption / motor command output in short circuit or overload

Manual reset without cutting thruster power: hold the enable button for at least 3 seconds (LED blue), release; the control goes to disabled. At start-up, very fast red = flash CRC error, fast red = EEPROM CRC error, very fast fuchsia = lever calibration error, very fast blue = command serialisation error: stop using it and contact Quick service. Maintenance: none special; clean with a soft cloth dampened with water.
