Quick PCS System — User Manual & Installation Guides

System & Modules

  • Modular system on a CAN bus backbone controlling up to two bow thrusters, two stern thrusters and two windlasses.
  • Minimum system: one server module, one display module, one interface module and one control module. Connect only genuine Quick PCS products; driving the PCS directly without a PCS NCG module voids the warranty of every PCS product on the network.
Module Function
PCS SRV Server: detects all modules at switch-on and manages control/interface traffic. Only one per system; its USB flash drive must stay plugged in (firmware updates, log.txt).
PCS DTW / PCS DTWF Display (DTWF recessed): first configuration, actuator data, personal settings, errors. At least one per system.
PCS TJ1 / TJ1F Single thruster control (one or two bow thrusters).
PCS TJ2 / TJ2F Dual thruster control (bow and stern).
PCS WJ1 / WJ1F – WJ2 / WJ2F Single / dual (left and right) windlass control. F = recessed (flush).
PCS GTW-A Interface for AC actuators (frequency inverter, GDC A030 cable to the drive's CANopen RJ45 port, RJ45 terminator supplied).
PCS GTW-B Interface for DC actuators (GDC B030 cable to the CAN connector of the Quick MSC drive).
PCS MCI-A Interface for hydraulic actuators, with the PCS SVJB junction box (to the solenoid valves) and PCS TSB (reservoir sensors).
PCS MCI-B Interface for DC-AC or QSY extra-low-voltage actuators (MDC B030 cable to the 35P connector of the DC-AC drive).
PCS NCG-T / NCG-W Gateways that let OEM control systems drive and monitor the thrusters / windlasses. PCS control modules are still required for direct control in an emergency.
PCS CHC / PCS MCI-CHC Chain counter display and windlass sensor interface (not seen by the server).

Installing the CAN Bus Backbone

  • Backbone max 100 m, drop cables max 5 m each, bending radius greater than 40 mm. Exactly two terminations, one at each end.
  • Drops connect through MMM junctions; where several drops start from one point, FMM junctions shorten the backbone. Use only the listed Quick cables.
  • Feed the backbone through the power cable's MM junction, placed with an equal number of modules on each side, via an accessible switch (not supplied) and a fast-blow fuse sized by adding up the maximum current absorption of every module and rounding up to the next commercial size.
  • Note each module's serial number and position while installing: you need them for the first configuration (each installation manual has a table for this).
  • Panel modules (TJ/WJ controls, DTW display): Ø 70 mm milling cutter for the body, Ø 2.5 mm pilot holes for the 4 screws; flush versions: 4 corner holes Ø 8 mm and cut along the template. Depth behind the panel: TJ/WJ min. 100 mm (flush min. 115 mm), DTW min. 80 mm (flush min. 95 mm).
  • Box modules (SRV, GTW, MCI, NCG, SVJB): 4 flat-head screws under 4 mm (not supplied), Ø 2.5 mm pilot in fibreglass, M4 on metal; smooth level surface, room above for the connectors. Put the SRV where its USB drive is reachable and the NCG near the OEM control unit.
  • Keep modules at least 25 cm from the compass, 50 cm from radio receivers, 1 m from transmitters (except SSB) and 2 m from SSB transmitters and the radar beam.

All powered modules: supply from 9 to 32 Vdc, operating temperature from -20°C to +70 °C, CAN bus. Below 0 °C the DTW display reacts more slowly. Use the maximum absorption column to size the backbone fuse.

First Configuration

  1. At first switch-on the DTW shows the MOTOR UNITS menu: BOW THRUSTER NO., STERN THRUSTER NO., WINDLASS NO. (if it does not, reset all associations from the SERVICE MENU → FACTORY SETTINGS).
  2. For each actuator choose ONE or TWO, then pick the serial number of the interface module that drives it.
  3. Select EXIT, then switch the PCS off and on at the power switch. The system works only when every detected interface module is assigned.
  4. Set DATE AND TIME in the MAIN MENU (hold SELECT 1.5 seconds); a wrong date/time shows an error.
  5. If an actuator turns the wrong way: SERVICE MENU (UP + DOWN together for 3 seconds) → PARAMETERS → INTERFACES → actuator → REV ROTATION = YES.
  • SERVICE MENU parameters (changes need Quick's consent): ACC RAMP and DEC RAMP 0.3 s / 2.0, STOP INV TIME 0.3 s / 1.7 (GTW-B only), REV ROTATION; per-gateway PARITY; server N. ENABLED CONTROLS (ONE/TWO) and SINGLE LEV PRIORITY.
  • With a PCS NCG-T B01 (Mercury) or C02 (Volvo Penta) gateway, set SERVER → N. ENABLED CONTROLS to TWO (the gateway supplements say to hold both arrow keys 1.5 seconds to enter the SERVICE MENU).
  • NCG-T B01: isolated OEM CAN interface, not terminated internally, N2K pinout. NCG-T C02: isolated OEM bus supply (12 Vdc, 220 mA max), internal 120Ω termination, Volvo Penta adapter cable to the Thruster Control Module P/N 24510291; requires Volvo Penta Assisted Docking (DPI and IPS 10, 15, 20 and 30) or Joystick Docking for single DPI, EVC2.0 25W49 or later, THCM software 24972444 via Autoconfig.

Using the PCS

  • A connected control flashes its green enable LED once per second. Hold the enable button for at least one second (1 s beep) to enable it; enabling another control of the same type disables the idle one.
  • Move the levers: the arrow lights, the buzzer beeps once per second and the DTW shows the power used. Thrusters: the boat carries way after you let go.
  • Two controls can be active together only if one runs thrusters and the other windlasses, or (thrusters only) one is a PCS control and the other an OEM control on the NCG-T with N. ENABLED CONTROLS = TWO.
  • HOLD (thrusters): set the levers, hold HOLD for 3 seconds, release both; the HOLD LED flashes orange and the beep doubles. Cancel with HOLD or a lever; it stops automatically after two minutes. Never leave the helm with HOLD on.
  • Auto-disable after the DISABLING TIME set per control (1' - 10' or always enabled).
  • DTW screens: summary (bars per actuator and "PCS READY"), one detail page per interface (power %, voltage, current, temperature where available), and the error list (press SELECT to scroll).
  • Module STATUS LED (SRV, GTW, MCI, NCG, MCI CHC): green = powered and operating, orange = non-locking error, red = locking error. Error codes from the drives are listed with code and short text on the DTW; a "Backdoor" reset is SELECT (display) or ENABLE (control) held for 10 seconds.

Troubleshooting & Maintenance

Problem Solution
Modules not detected by the server Check the network connections and restart
Modules report insufficient supply Let the supply stabilise; check battery charge
PCS control commands not executed correctly Contact a Quick service centre
OEM control commands not executed correctly Contact the OEM control supplier
ATV DRIVE ERR. displayed Error from the Schneider ATV900 drive: see its documentation
Firmware not updating Check the updated firmware is on the server's USB drive
Bow/stern or left/right windlass controls swapped Re-assign the interfaces to the correct actuator positions
Thruster or windlass direction reversed vs. the lever Change the REVERSE ROTATION parameter

Maintenance: check cables and connections once a year; clean displays and levers with a soft cloth dampened with water, no chemicals. Firmware is updated from the server's USB flash drive (MAIN MENU → SEARCH UPDATES).
