Current after an initial period of use; speeds measured with an 8 mm chain gypsy. Cable size is the minimum for a total length L < 20 m. Breaker: DC delayed-action thermal-magnetic or hydraulic-magnetic. Studs for thicker decks on request.

Gypsy, Chain and Rope

Gypsy Chain Rope
6 mm 6 mm DIN 766, 6 mm ISO 1/2"
7 mm - 1/4" 7 mm DIN 766, 7 mm ISO, 1/4" G4, 1/4" BBB 1/2"
8 mm 8 mm DIN 766, 8 mm ISO 1/2"
5/16" 5/16" BBB, 5/16" G4 1/2"

Rope values refer to three-strand polyester rope with a rope/chain splice made with the Quick system. ISO = ISO EN 818-3.

In the Box & Tools

  • Windlass, reversing contactor unit, base gasket, drill template, handle, assembly bolts and screws, manual and warranty.
  • Drill bit Ø 9 mm (23/64"), Ø 51 mm (2") and Ø 108 mm (4"1/4) hollow mills; 10 mm and 13 mm wrenches.
  • Recommended: RL control board (mod. 800), HRC1002 handheld, foot switch (mod. 900), hydraulic-magnetic breaker, CHC1102M / CHC1202M chain counters, R02 / P02 / H02 radio control.

Fitting

  • Align the gypsy with the bow roller; keep the deck faces parallel (compensate if not, or the motor loses power); deck thickness within the table.
  • No obstructions below deck; a shallow peak causes jams.
  • Drill four holes with the template, clean and seal the chain hole (marine paint, gel coat or two-pack epoxy), fit the gasket, insert the shaft into the reduction unit, tighten the stud nuts and connect to the contactor unit.

DP2 E Drilling Template

A B C D E F G H I
mm ø9 Ø108 Ø51 89 44 145.79 196.26 33.5 5
inch ø23/64 Ø4" 1/4 Ø2" 3" 1/2 1" 3/4 5" 47/64 7" 3/4 1"5/16 3/16

A = four stud holes, B = gearbox cut-out, C = chain hole (bow to the left on the sheet). The template is A3 at scale 1:1: print it at 100% and check the 100 mm / 4" scale bar before drilling.

Wiring

  • Reversing contactor unit T6415-12 (12V) / T6415-24 (24V); control fuse 4A (12V) / 2A (24V).
  • Total cable length L = L1 + L2 + L3 + L4 + L5 sizes the motor cable (main diagram on page 34 of the PDF).
  • Make sure cables are not live before wiring.

Cautions, Use & Troubleshooting

  • Quick windlasses are designed to weigh the anchor only, not to hold loads from storm conditions. Always deactivate the windlass when not in use and check for swimmers before dropping anchor.
  • Fit at least two controls in case one is damaged; use a Quick hydraulic-magnetic (or thermal-magnetic) delayed-action DC breaker as motor protection – it also isolates the control circuit.
  • Mount the (reversing) contactor box where it is protected from water.
  • Once anchored, take the chain onto a chain stopper or bollard; the windlass must never be the only securing device. Isolate it during navigation and secure the chain or rope to a fixed point.
  • Make sure the motor cannot be powered when working the windlass by hand: a remote control (handheld or radio) could start it. Never run it electrically with the handle in the drum or gypsy cover.

Clutch

The clutch cones link the gypsy to the main shaft. Insert the handle in the drum bush or gypsy cover and turn it counter-clockwise to release the clutch; clockwise to re-engage it.

Weighing & Casting

  • Weighing: start the engine, check the clutch is engaged, remove the handle and press UP. Watch the last few metres of chain to avoid damaging the bow.
  • Casting by hand: release the clutch and let the gypsy run; turn the handle clockwise to slow the chain.
  • Casting electrically: press DOWN for a controlled, even release.
  • Once anchored, take the load off the windlass: fasten the chain or secure it to a strong point with a rope.

Troubleshooting

  • Windlass stops but the breaker has not tripped: wait a few seconds and try again – do not keep the button pressed.
  • Breaker tripped: reset it and wait a few minutes before weighing again.
  • Still blocked after several attempts: move the boat to free the anchor.

Maintenance & Parts

  • Rinse salt off with fresh water regularly; switch off the motor supply before any manual work.
  • Yearly, drum version: loosen the bush (2) with the handle (1), pull off the drum (3) and top clutch cone (5), remove the rope/chain stripper and pull off the gypsy.
  • No-drum version: remove the gypsy cover (4), top cone (5), chain stripper and gypsy (6).
  • Grease the shaft thread and the gypsy cone seats (5 and 7); clean and grease motor and contactor terminals.
