In the Box & Tools

  • Windlass (top + gearmotor); reversing contactor box (R1 500W) or contactor box (R3 700-1000-1400W); base gasket; lever; assembly screws; manual, warranty and drilling template.
  • R1 (headed "DP1" in the manual): drill Ø 9 mm (23/64") and Ø 11 mm (7/16"); hole saw Ø 50 mm; 10 and 13 mm wrenches.
  • R3 (headed "DP3"): drill Ø 9 mm and Ø 16 mm (5/8"); hole saw Ø 60 mm; 13 mm wrench.

Requirements & Fitting

  • Align the gypsy with the bow roller; positive chain tilt up to 10° at the roller and up to 5° to the deck.
  • Deck faces flat and parallel before tightening the nuts; thickness within the table; no obstructions below deck (the drawing shows 40 cm (16") of drop).
  • Drill with the template (R3: cutting area and sensor hole are marked), seal the chain hole (marine paint, gel coat or epoxy), fit the gasket, join top and gearbox, tighten the stud nuts (8÷10 Nm in the drawing) and wire up.
  • 700/1000/1400 W: the gearbox flange fits either side (flange screws 3÷4,5 Nm, same overall dimensions); motorgearbox rotates every 45° on the base.

Rider Drilling Templates

R1 300/500W (A4) mm inch R3 700/1000/1400W (A3) mm inch
A Ø9 Ø23/64 Ø9 Ø23/64
B Ø11 Ø7/16 Ø11 Ø7/16
C Ø50 Ø1"31/32 Ø60 Ø2"5/16
D Ø120 Ø4"23/32 Ø155 Ø6"7/64
E 36 1"27/64 53 2"5/64

A = four fixing holes, B = single hole, C = central cut-out, D = base outline, E = hole offset from the centreline. Both sheets are 1:1: print at 100% and check the 4" / 100 mm scale bar before drilling.

Wiring

  • R1 500 W: reversing contactor box T6415-12 (12V) / T6415-24 (24V); L = L1 + L2 + L3 + L4 + L5.
  • R3 700/1000/1400 W: contactor box T6315-12 (12V) / T6315-24 (24V); L = L1 + L2 + L3 + L4.
  • Control fuse 4A (12V) / 2A (24V); WCB hydraulic-magnetic breaker per the data table.
  • Controls shown: WCS 820 / WCS B / WCS 830, HRC 1002, 900U/900D foot switches, CHC 1103 / CHC 1203 / QNC CHC counters, RRC R02 / P02 / H02.

Cautions, Use & Troubleshooting

  • Quick windlasses are designed to weigh the anchor only, not to hold loads from storm conditions. Always deactivate the windlass when not in use and check for swimmers before dropping anchor.
  • Fit at least two controls in case one is damaged; use a Quick hydraulic-magnetic (or thermal-magnetic) delayed-action DC breaker as motor protection – it also isolates the control circuit.
  • Mount the (reversing) contactor box where it is protected from water.
  • Once anchored, take the chain onto a chain stopper or bollard; the windlass must never be the only securing device. Isolate it during navigation and secure the chain to a fixed point.
  • Make sure the motor cannot be powered when working the windlass by hand: a remote control (handheld or radio) could start it. Never run it electrically with the handle in the drum or gypsy cover.

Clutch

The clutch cones link the gypsy to the main shaft. Insert the handle in the drum bush or gypsy cover and turn it counter-clockwise to release the clutch; clockwise to re-engage it.

Weighing & Casting

  • Weighing: start the engine, check the clutch is engaged, remove the handle and press UP. Watch the last few metres of chain to avoid damaging the bow.
  • Casting by hand: release the clutch and let the gypsy run; turn the handle counter-clockwise to slow the chain.
  • Casting electrically: press DOWN for a controlled, even release.
  • Once anchored, take the load off the windlass: fasten the chain or secure it to a strong point with a rope.

Troubleshooting

  • Windlass stops but the breaker has not tripped: wait a few seconds and try again – do not keep the button pressed.
  • Breaker tripped: reset it and wait a few minutes before weighing again.
  • Still blocked after several attempts: move the boat to free the anchor.

Maintenance

  • Rinse salt off with fresh water regularly; switch off the motor supply before any manual work.
  • Yearly, drum version: loosen the bush (3) with the handle (1), pull off the drum (4), remove the top clutch cone (5), undo the screws (R1-14, R3-16) to remove the chain stripper (R1-13, R3-17), remove the gypsy (6) and bottom cone (5).
  • No-drum version: remove the gypsy cover (2) with the handle, then as above.
  • Grease the shaft thread and the gypsy cone seats with marine grease; clean and grease the motor and contactor terminals. Gearmotor work only when cold, by qualified personnel.
