In the Box & Tools

  • Windlass (deck unit + motorgearbox), contactor unit (RY 3000W) or reversing contactor unit (RY 3500W), base gasket, drill template, handle, assembly bolts and screws, manual and warranty. Hydraulic: no contactor.
  • Drill bit Ø 15 mm (19/32"); Ø 150 mm hollow mill; 17 mm and 19 mm wrenches.
  • Template in the manual: A/B Ø 15 (Ø 19/32) holes, C Ø 150 cut-out, D Ø 267 (Ø 10"33/64) base. The inch value of C is printed as 5"29/32 in the tools list and 5"5/16 on the drawing.

Fitting

  • Gypsy aligned with the bow roller; deck faces parallel (or compensated); thickness within the table; no obstructions below deck (the drawing shows 40 cm (16") of drop).
  • Drill four holes with the template, clean and seal the chain hole (marine paint, gel coat or two-pack epoxy), fit the gasket, insert the shaft into the reduction unit, tighten the stud nuts and wire to the contactor.
  • Hydraulic: connect the hoses from the selector valve to the motor flanges.

Wiring

  • ROY 3000W 24V: contactor unit T6315-24 (24V); L = L1 + L2 + L3 + L4.
  • ROY 3500W 24V: reversing contactor unit T6415-24 (24V); L = L1 + L2 + L3 + L4 + L5 + L6.
  • Control fuse 2A (24V); 100A Quick breaker for the DC models.
  • AC: single-phase diagram for a 230V motor up to 2,2KW (fuses FU1 8-15A aM); three-phase diagram for ROY 4000/5500W 380V (motor 400V, max 5,5KW, fuses FU1 8-16A aM). Controls run from a 24V battery through KM1/KM2 contactors.
  • Hydraulic: selector valve between pressure input, tank and motor.

Cautions, Use & Drum

  • Quick windlasses are designed to weigh the anchor only, not to hold loads from storm conditions. Always deactivate the windlass when not in use and check for swimmers before dropping anchor.
  • Fit at least two controls in case one is damaged; use a Quick hydraulic-magnetic (or thermal-magnetic) delayed-action DC breaker as motor protection – it also isolates the control circuit.
  • Mount the (reversing) contactor box where it is protected from water.
  • Once anchored, take the chain onto a chain stopper or bollard; the windlass must never be the only securing device. Isolate it during navigation and secure the chain to a fixed point.
  • Make sure the motor cannot be powered when working the windlass by hand: a remote control (handheld or radio) could start it. Never run it electrically with the handle in the drum or gypsy cover.

Weighing & Casting

  • Clutch (9 and 11): handle in the bush, counter-clockwise to release, clockwise to engage.
  • Weighing: start the engine, clutch engaged, brake released, handle removed, press UP. If it stops without tripping, wait and retry; if the breaker trips, reset and wait a few minutes; if still blocked, move the boat.
  • Casting by hand: release the clutch and the brake; turn the handle clockwise to slow the chain. Electrically: press DOWN.

Using the Drum (warping)

  • First make the anchor and its rode fast to a bitt or strong point.
  • Lock the gypsy with the brake, release the clutch (at least 2 turns of the bush anticlockwise), remove the handle and take at least 3 turns of rope on the drum.
  • Keep tension on the tail while the windlass runs; varying the tension changes the take-up speed. Keep hands clear of the drum.
  • Afterwards, screw the clutch back up (clockwise) and secure the rope to a bitt.

Maintenance & Parts

  • Rinse salt off with fresh water regularly; switch off the motor supply before any manual work.
  • Yearly, drum version: loosen the bush (2) with the handle (1), pull off the drum (4) and top clutch cone (9), loosen the stripper screws (36 and 34) and remove the rope/chain stripper (33), pull off the gypsy (10).
  • No-drum version: loosen the gypsy cover (5), then as above.
  • Grease the shaft thread (17 or 20) and the gypsy cone seats (9 and 11); clean and grease motor and contactor terminals.
  • Item numbers in the maintenance text are as printed and do not all match the parts list below.
