In the box: Smart CHC gauge, mounting ring-nut, gasket, connection cable, protective cover, manual and warranty.

  • App compatibility: iPhone 7 with iOS14 or later; Android phones with NFC and Android 6.0 or later.

Before You Cut

  • Quick windlasses already have the sensor and magnet the Smart CHC needs. More magnets on the same gypsy improve precision: same circumference, equally spaced.
  • Other windlasses need a Reed-type magnetic sensor on the windlass and one or more magnets on the gypsy; Quick sells an optional installation kit.
  • Disconnect the main supply so it cannot be switched on by accident.
  • Flat, smooth surface where the operator can see it; a curved panel damages the gauge and the O-ring seal.
  • Distances: 25 cm from the compass, 50 cm from radio receivers, 1 m from radio transmitters (2 m from SSB), 2 m from the radar beam.

Mounting

  • Drill a ø 52 mm hole; enlarge and finish with a conical bit, file or sandpaper and deburr. An oversized hole spoils the O-ring seal.
  • Fit the rubber gasket on the gauge and insert it from the front.
  • Choose the ring-nut direction for the panel thickness: A for 0,5–18 mm, B for 0,5–8 mm (as shown in the manual figure), and hand-tighten. Too much torque damages the case and the seal.
  • Push the connector into the back of the gauge, respecting the key, until it clicks.

Electrical Connection

Pin Wire colour Function
1 Red 12/24 V battery positive
2 Black Battery negative
3 Black/blue Gypsy sensor input
4 Brown UP chain signal input
5 Green Not in use (insulate)
6 Blue/red DOWN chain signal input
7 Yellow/black Not in use (insulate)
8 Yellow/red Not in use (insulate)
  • UP and DOWN inputs read the signals from the windlass remote control to the contactor / reversing contactor unit; the sensor wire goes to the windlass sensor.
  • Fit a 4 A fast-acting fuse and an ON/OFF switch on the gauge supply.
  • Do not power the gauge from the motor or propeller battery bank.
  • Size cables to their length, keep them free of strain and pressure, and power up only after checking the connections.

Incorrect wiring can cause short circuits, battery explosion and damage to the electronics.

Display and Setup

What the Display Shows

  • The gauge wakes when the connected Quick ON/OFF control (joystick, push-buttons, up/down panels) is switched on. Configure it with the app before first use.
  • Chain down and free fall: green moving bargraph. Chain up: red moving bargraph. Windlass stopped: white steady bargraph.
  • Warnings stay on screen until solved: opposing commands, sensor not detected or warping motor in use, low voltage.

App Settings (NFC)

  • Open the Quick Smart CHC app and hold the phone on the NFC area of the gauge.
  • SET TO ZERO resets the chain out; SET UP opens the parameters; SEND writes them and the gauge restarts.
  • Backlight 1 to 5 (default 3); unit metres or feet (default metres).
  • Gypsy circumference: chain length per gypsy turn in mm (default 160 mm).
  • Number of magnets on the gypsy (default 1).
  • Auto free fall: ON only on a windlass with auto free fall, with the time the windlass takes to lock the gypsy again.

Measuring the Gypsy Lap

  • Mark the chain and the gypsy near the main axle.
  • Turn the gypsy one full turn back to the mark.
  • Measure the chain between the main axis and the mark (precision 1 mm). Inches × 2,54 = centimetres, rounded to one decimal.

Maintenance

  • Cut the power before cleaning or maintenance. Check cables and connections once a year.
  • Clean the front with a soft cloth dampened with water; no chemicals or harsh products.
