Quick TCD 2022 & 2042 Thruster Remote Command — Installation & Use Manual

Overview & Technical Data

  • On/off remote controls for Quick bow and stern thrusters: TCD 2022 with two direction buttons, TCD 2042 with a joystick. 12/24 Vdc supply; several TCD controls can be connected in parallel.
  • Protection against reverse polarity, output short circuit, prolonged motor activity and interruption of the thruster control wiring; automatic priority and auto-disable; acoustic signals can be switched off.
  • In the box: control, drilling template, 4 self-tapping fixing screws, manual. The 2-wire connection cable is not supplied.

Mounting & Wiring

  • Install after all carpentry work: fibreglass dust can jam the controls and is not covered by warranty.
  • Clean, smooth, flat area the helmsman can reach, with rear access and the back protected from water and damp. At least 25 cm from the compass, 50 cm from radio receivers, 1 m from transmitters (except SSB), 2 m from SSB transmitters and the radar beam.
  1. Tape the template on, mark the centre, drill the body hole with a 63-mm Ø hole saw and pre-drill the screws with a 2.5-mm Ø bit; deburr.
  2. Peel the adhesive gasket without touching the adhesive, fit the control and fix it with the four self-tapping screws (M3 countersunk screws on metal sheet, not supplied).
  3. Apply the polycarbonate label starting from one edge of the base and press firmly; then peel the transparent film (a piece of tape helps). Do not apply the adhesives below 18° C.
  • Plug the control connector into the connector coming from the thruster; extension cords and a splitter for a second station are optional.
  • Fit an accessible on/off switch and a 4A fast-blow fuse on the control supply (neither supplied); size the cables for their length.
  • Do not power the control from the thruster battery; with a separate service battery the battery groups must share a common negative. Cables 1 m from radio signal cables, 2 m from SSB transmitter cables.

Using the Control

  • At switch-on all LEDs light for 2 seconds (LED test), then the control is disabled.
  • Enable: hold the enabling button for at least 1 second until the enabling LEDs flash faster and it beeps; release and they stay lit. While enabled it beeps every 5 seconds.
  • Right button or joystick right moves the bow (or stern) to the right, left to the left; direction LED red = left, green = right, intermittent beep while running. The boat carries on by inertia after release.
  • Bow and stern thrusters together: same direction = sideways move, opposite directions = rotation. A 2-second delay applies when reversing direction immediately.
  • Disabled by the enabling button, by enabling another control in parallel (the last one enabled is active), or after 6 minutes without commands (about 1 second tone).
  • Sound off/on: remove power, hold the enabling key while powering up (one beep = sounds off, two beeps = sounds on), release.
  • Practise in open water and make sure there are no swimmers or floating objects near the thruster.

System Errors & Problems

  • All LEDs flashing fast at switch-on: flash checksum error – contact Quick service.
  • Low supply (control enabled): below 10.5Vdc for over a second; clears above 11.5Vdc. The enabling LEDs flash slowly with a beep.
  • Both TCD 2022 direction buttons pressed: direction LEDs flash and the command stops until released.
  • Thermal protection: after about 5 minutes and 40 seconds of continuous (or equivalent) running, the control locks the thruster for 20 minutes of partial cooling (full cooling about 40 minutes); direction and enabling LEDs flash with an alarm 10 seconds per minute. The elapsed cooling time is remembered through a power cut.
Enabling LED flashes Problem (manual reset: remove the cause, switch the control off and on)
1 Overload on the command electrical line – check the wiring and the thruster contactor absorption
2 Interruption on the command electrical line – check the wiring
3 Problem on the BTR retractable thruster (if installed)
4 Problem in the PSS parallel/series switch (if installed)
5 Problem on the TMS line switch (if installed)

With codes 3, 4 and 5 the external device may also need to be switched off and on; see its manual. Maintenance: check cables and connections once a year; clean with a soft cloth dampened with water.
