Technical data, handling, installation, DC/AC/inverter/hydraulic wiring, drum coupling, free fall and band brake use, maintenance and the coded spare parts of the Quick XRoy XR6, XR7, XR8 and XR9 vertical windlasses.

Technical Data
All parts exposed to the sea are stainless steel and the gypsy is brass alloy. Every XR has a band brake with a movable fixing block, so the brake handwheel can be aimed in several positions on deck. Model code example XR7 40 24 D: series, power, voltage, drum.

Supply, Handling & Tools
- Supplied: windlass (top + gearmotor), contactor or reversing contactor box (DC only), lever, assembly screws, manual, warranty, drilling template.
- Required, not included: RH or LH chain pipe and band brake handwheel. Recommended: EC-BOX for AC motors (XR7/XR8 up to 5.5kW), inverter, controls, chain stopper.
- Handling by skilled personnel with a mechanical aid: remove the crate top and lift with straps or slings round the drum or gypsy.
- XR6: drill Ø 14 mm (35/64"), hole saw Ø 190 mm (7" 31/64), 17 and 19 mm wrenches. XR7: Ø 15 mm (19/32"), hole saw Ø 200 mm (7" 7/8). XR8: Ø 15 mm, hole saw Ø 250 mm (9" 27/32). XR9: Ø 18 mm (45/64"), hole saw Ø 340 mm (13" 25/64), 24 mm wrench.
Fitting
- Align the gypsy with the bow roller; deck faces parallel (or compensated, else motor power is lost); deck thickness within the table; nothing obstructing the chain below deck – a shallow locker causes jams.
- Drill with the template, clean and seal the chain hole (marine paint, epoxy resin gel).
- XR6/XR7/XR8: position the top and tighten the stud nuts; fit the O-ring in the flange, fix the flange to the base insert with 6 screws, insert the gearmotor on the shaft and tighten.
- XR9: position the top, tighten the stud nuts, insert the gearmotor on the shaft and tighten.
- Electric gearmotors rotate every 45° or 90° depending on type; hydraulic motors every 90°. AC motors connect to the mains; hydraulic motors to the distribution valve. Make sure cables are not live.

Controls in all diagrams: multi-purpose push-button panel and foot-operated switches.
Cautions & Use
- Keep hands, feet and objects clear of the chain and gypsy. Make sure the motor cannot be powered when working by hand, and never run it with the lever in the drum or gypsy cover.
- Secure the chain with a retainer before sailing; after anchoring, take it onto a chain stopper or bollard. Isolate the windlass during navigation. 24 V models: keep the reversing contactor box away from water.
XR6 Clutch
Lever (D) in the drum bush (E): counter-clockwise to release the clutch (B) from the main shaft (A), clockwise to re-engage. Weighing: engine on, clutch engaged, lever removed, press UP. Casting by hand: release the clutch and control the chain with the brake (C), turned clockwise to slow it. Electrically: press DOWN.
XR7 / XR8 / XR9 Drum Coupling
- Screw the bushing (3) clockwise with the lever (1): the drum (9) lowers onto the gypsy (14). Align the notches on drum and gypsy; do not overtighten so the springs can engage the front couplings.
- Unscrew the bushing 1/4 of a turn counter-clockwise and remove the lever.
- Run the motor: the springs engage the couplings. Check visually (Fig. B), screw the bushing clockwise, remove the lever.
- Release the band brake before using the windlass. Do not strain the limit switch.
Free Fall & Drum Use
- Free fall: chain stopper open, band brake fully tight, bushing unscrewed to its end stop (drum up, gypsy free); then ease the band brake with the handwheel to control the fall.
- Drum with gypsy locked: chain stopper locking the chain, band brake fully tight, bushing unscrewed (drum up); run the drum with the controls and take at least 3 turns of rope counter-clockwise. Slide the rope on the drum to vary speed and pull; keep hands clear.
Maintenance
- Motor not powered during manual work; take the chain or rope off the gypsy and drum.
- Wash salt off regularly with fresh water.
- Once a year disassemble gypsy and drum, clean every part and grease with high-performance silicone grease: shaft thread, cones and clutch on the XR6; drum-bushing O-rings on the XR7, XR8 and XR9.
- XR6: remove the bushing (2) from the drum (3) with the lever (1); remove the chain stripper (screws 4, stripper 5); take out the pins (6) and handwheel (7), the screws and washer (8) from the cover (10), pull the shaft (9) from the band brake (12), remove the pin (11) and unhook the band from the gypsy (14); slide the gypsy locking element off the shaft (15) and remove the cones (13).
- XR7/XR8/XR9: remove screw (2) and bushing (3) from the drum (4); remove the chain stripper (6) from its support (7); dismantle the band brake (pins 8, handwheel 9, nut 11, assembly 12, shaft 14, circlip 23, bushes 15, nuts 16, assemblies 17, braking unit 18); remove the oil seals (22) and washer (24) and slide the gypsy (25) off the shaft (21).
