  • The batch number is stamped on the base of the centre stem: remove the self-tailing arm and drum (installation steps 2 & 3) to read it, and quote it for any service enquiry.
  • Performance options (QuickTrim™) must be set before installation: read the whole manual first.
  • A three-speed upgrade is available for the two-speed 45QT (quick reference guide).

Installation

Required

  • 6 x M8 or 5/16" Grade 316 stainless steel fasteners, length to suit the deck. A4-70 hexagon socket cylinder head screws recommended (the manual cites DIN7991), torque no more than 17.1Nm.
  • 6 x Grade 316 large washers or a backing plate, and 6 x Grade 316 nuts.
  • 6mm hex key, spanner for the nuts.
  • Drill Ø8.5mm for M8 bolts (or 11/32" for 5/16" bolts).
  • Drilling template, sealant / bedding compound, Tef-Gel™ isolating paste.

Mounting Position

  • Smooth, flat mounting surface; line entry 3-8° from horizontal.
  • Align the drive gear to the line entry as shown on the drilling template.
  • The self-tailing arm can be fitted in 8 positions: set it so the rope drops clear of the winch as it leaves the self tailer (the drum turns clockwise).
  • The template sheet calls for 5 x M8 cylinder head screws but shows 6 holes; the manual specifies 6 fasteners (as printed).

Installation Steps

  1. Confirm position and orientation, clean the mounting surface and tape the drilling template in place.
  2. Remove the self-tailing arm: pull back the spring-loaded release latch with a fingertip, rotate the arm slightly anti-clockwise and lift it clear.
  3. Grip the top of the drum and pull it vertically off the centre stem (push gently on the central drive shaft with your thumbs if needed). Stand the centre stem on the template with the holes aligned to check the rope entry against the output drive gear.
  4. Drill Ø8.5mm holes for M8 bolts (Ø11/32" for 5/16"). Remove the template, clear the debris and clean the deck so the sealant can adhere.
  5. Apply sealant under the base plate around the holes, keeping the drainage channels in its underside clean and free of sealant. On metal or carbon fibre the base plate must be completely isolated from the surface to prevent galvanic corrosion.
  6. Fit the base plate with large washers (or backing plate) and nuts below deck, Tef-Gel™ under each fastener head. Hold the fastener with a hex key and tighten the nut from below so the anodising is not worn. No more than 17.1Nm.
  7. Slide the drum fully down over the centre stem. Lay the closing washer in its recess in the self tailer, correct side up.
  8. Place the self-tailing arm so it overhangs the rope splitter, rotate the closing plate inside the arm to align with the shaft, and centre it. Rotate to the chosen position, let the side opposite the latch drop into a bayonet notch, pull back the latch so the arm seats all round, then rotate slightly clockwise until it clicks. A visible red flash means the latch is not fully engaged.
  9. Before fitting a handle, check the drum turns smoothly clockwise by hand and will not turn anti-clockwise. With a handle: clockwise drives the drum in its slowest speed, anti-clockwise in the faster speed.

The drilling template (996220, for RA6452, RA6453, RA6502 and RA6503, in the downloads) is drawn at 1:1 on A4: print it at 100% / actual size and check the printed copy against the dimensions on the sheet before drilling.

QuickTrim™

Enabling QuickTrim™

  • The winch leaves the factory with QuickTrim™ disabled: it works as a traditional self-tailing winch until you enable it.
  • Remove the self-tailing arm, then the closing washer.
  • Locate and remove the countersunk cross-head screw shown in the manual. Keep it: refitting it disables QuickTrim™ again.
  • Refit the self-tailing arm as in installation step 8.
  • Once enabled, demonstrate the feature to new users before they use the winch.

Using QuickTrim™

  • The winch tensions, eases and casts off like a traditional self-tailing winch; QuickTrim™ lets you make minor trim adjustments without removing the handle or taking the rope out of the self tailer.
  • To ease: hold the tail of the rope in one hand; put the other hand on the top cover of the self tailer, fingers lying across the rope.
  • Grip with the palm and rotate the top cover anti-clockwise against the spring pressure, and hold it there: the self tailer turns beneath the cover and the line eases off the drum in a controlled manner. Grip depends on load and number of wraps; you can assist the rope on the drum or use fewer wraps.
  • At the right trim let the top cover spring back: the self tailer is locked again and the winch is ready for normal use.
  • Designed for minor adjustments: useful where tension is adjusted often on sheets, halyards and other lines.

Service & Maintenance

General

  • Rinse with fresh water after each use to stop salt and contaminants building up.
  • Complete service (dismantle, clean, lubricate) every two years; every year under extensive use such as racing, charter or extensive offshore sailing.
  • Use ANDERSEN WINCH GREASE. Most other greases, including some labelled "marine grease", are not suitable and may cause a malfunction that could result in serious injury.
  • Inspect the pawls and replace the springs every second year, with genuine Ronstan or Andersen pawls and springs only. Winch Pawl & Spring Kit RA710052 contains 8 pawls and 16 springs.

Required for Service

  • Winch handle
  • Hex key 2mm for M3 fasteners (or 1/16" for 1/8")
  • Hex key 6mm for M8 fasteners (or 1/4" for 5/16")
  • Small flat screwdriver
  • White mineral spirits
  • ANDERSEN winch grease and a small brush

Servicing Steps

Steps

  1. Remove the ball bearing race and the roller bearing from the centre stem.
  2. Remove the 5 screws and washers at the base of the centre stem (6mm hex key).
  3. Remove the retaining clip (small flat screwdriver or pliers) to release the ratchet gear assembly. Leaving the clip in place lets the centre stem and all gears come away as one unit: useful when servicing off the boat.
  4. Lift the centre stem, with the drive shaft, off the base plate. Remove the central gear assembly, the drive gear with its axle pin, and the ratchet gear assembly.
  5. Ratchet gear assembly: remove the gear axle, bushing and washer, separate the gear from the ratchet gear and remove the two pawls and springs. Keep each assembly's parts separate.
  6. Central gear assembly: remove the spacer, take the gear off the lower shaft and prise the two pawls and springs from their recesses with a small flat screwdriver or knife.
  7. Clean all gears, pawls and springs with a brush and white mineral spirits. Very thin film of Andersen Winch Grease on the pawls, springs correctly oriented. Refit the gear and put the spacer over the lower shaft so it rests on the gear.
  8. Remove the three stainless steel dowel pins, grease lightly and refit.
  9. Reassemble in reverse order, lightly greasing all gear teeth, drive shaft and axles with a soft brush. Refit the centre stem and secure the retaining clip.
  10. Fasten the centre stem to the base plate with the 5 washers and screws (6mm hex key), no more than 17.1Nm.
  11. Refit the roller bearing and ball bearing race: both are self-lubricating and must not be greased. Refit drum and arm (installation steps 7 and 8) and check function (step 9).

Malfunctioning pawls may let the winch release unexpectedly. Press each pawl against its spring: it must move smoothly and return by itself to engage the gear. If not, replace the springs and check again.

Safety Notices

  • Do not install or operate the winch before reading and fully understanding the product manual. Winches are very powerful: used improperly they can cause significant damage and/or serious injury.
  • Every operator must understand proper operation and the hazards. Keep children and anyone not qualified clear of the winch and of any rigging or fittings under load; tie back long hair and loose clothing.
  • Remove winch handles when not in use. On an electric winch, turn off power when not in use, before any maintenance, and before clearing a rope override or other fault.
  • Lifting operations: never operate with the rope in the self tailer, and never use the self tailer as a cleat for a rope that lifts or suspends anything. Two persons, constant visual contact with the load, and the rope tied off or led to a cleat or bollard.
