Ronstan S30 Safety Rail System — User Instructions

Certification & System

  • Certified to EN795:2012 Type D (anchor devices); single person use only. Testing is witnessed by a Recognised Organisation, member of IACS.
  • For use with personal protection equipment to protect against falls from a height, such as when working outside conventional guardrails for cleaning and maintenance. Not for lifting equipment or any other purpose.
  • Suits standard and bent track to a minimum radius of 2500mm (custom bent track to order).
  • Fall arrest use: the user must have a means of limiting the maximum dynamic force during arrest of a fall to 6kN. Each harness or device on a separate attachment point; never rely on only one attachment point.
  • System: continuous track with plunger stop holes at 50mm centres and mounting holes at 100mm (last hole 48mm from each end on standard rails, max 50mm on rails cut on site); one tandem car assembly (one car with the spring-loaded plunger); two end stops.
  • Marine grade anodised aluminium cars, rails and end stops; recirculating Torlon® ball bearings; Grade 316 forged stainless steel pivoting shackles; rubber buffers; plunger with elliptical knob that can be locked disengaged.

Additional sliding cars for tools or equipment connect to the RCC30-2A tandem car with the RCC22-4 connector plate. The RC13081PS cover plate fits the RC13081S end stop to conceal the end of the track.

Installation

  • Installed only by competent persons or organisations, and verified by calculation and post-installation testing.
  • Track rail: 8mm countersunk Grade 316 stainless fasteners at 100mm centres, minimum tensile strength 700MPa. M8 hexagon socket countersunk A4-70 DIN7991 screws recommended, torque no more than 17.1Nm. End stops must also use 8mm countersunk Grade 316 stainless fasteners.
  • Longer runs: use more than one rail and trim to length, never exceeding 100mm between mounting fasteners (across a join of standard rails the spacing is 96mm). Joining insert RC1301J aids alignment.
  • Mount so the cars travel in a horizontal plane (parallel to the water plane) within ±5°; the rail itself may be on a vertical plane (0°), horizontal plane (90°) or an incline between.
  • Maximum loads transmitted to the structure: Fy = 12kN, moment M = 322.8Nm (26.9mm dimension shown on the load diagram). The structure and fasteners must not fail at these loads; isolate the fastener from the structure where needed to prevent corrosion.
  • The RCC30-2A comes with ball bearings fitted, on a short loading track rail: remove the RC13081S end stop, butt the loading rail end-to-end against the installed rail, slide the car across and refit the end stop. Do not discard the loading rail.
  • If a car cannot pass a discontinuity, a second car must be available after it: the user must always be attached to at least one car.
  • If the marking of the anchor device is not accessible after installation, add marking near it.

Testing & Use

  • Post-installation test before first use: 6kN on a single car for at least 15 seconds at each extremity and near the midpoint (on multi-rail systems, near the midpoint and at least one rail join). Then inspect per the annual procedure and record the results (Appendix A and B of the instructions).
  • Periodic test: the same 6kN / 15 second test at intervals of not more than five years in the absence of other regulations.
  • Use only by trained, competent persons with approved personal protective equipment, and with a rescue plan in place.
  • Disengage the plunger only while changing position; once in position, re-engage it to hold the car.

Inspection & Maintenance

Before each use

  • The safety rail system is securely fixed to its mounting surface and both end stops are in place at the extremities.
  • The sliding cars run smoothly and freely along the continuous run of track between the extremities.
  • The lanyard attachment points (pivoting shackles) are free to articulate. Any deformation in a shackle indicates a fall or overload: replace the shackle before using the anchor device.
  • No signs of excessive wear, corrosion, deformation or breakage of parts.
  • The plunger that fixes the car in position operates correctly, and all screws in the sliding car assembly are in place and secure.

Annual ball-bearing check

  • Remove the car onto its original short loading rail (remove the RC13081S end stop first; if you have no loading rail, contact the manufacturer before proceeding) and inspect the bearings from underneath.
  • Push the balls along the race with a small screwdriver to check they circulate freely; pushed together they should leave a space slightly less than one ball diameter, a larger space means balls are missing.
  • Each car (each half of the RCC30-2A, and RCC30-1A / RCC30-3A) must contain 46 balls. Replace missing, worn or cracked balls only with manufacturer-supplied bearings.
  • 5-yearly: remove each car the same way for full inspection (checklist in Appendix D).

Maintenance

  • Rinse all components regularly with fresh water to prevent the build-up of salt and contaminants; a mild soapy solution may be used, followed by a thorough fresh-water rinse.
  • No spray lubricants on the rail and ball bearings: they collect contaminants and dirt and compromise long-term performance.
  • The plunger assembly may be lubricated with a light grease: lift the spring-loaded plunger and grease the exposed rod below the elliptical knob.
  • Mark the anchor device with the date of the next or last inspection, and keep an equipment record for each component (installation, testing, inspection, maintenance and service).
  • After any fall, or in case of doubt about any component, remove it from service until a competent person has confirmed in writing that it is safe. No changes or alterations to components without the manufacturer's prior written consent.
