Main parts named in the instructions: bail, latch and trigger.

Operation

  • Release: depress the trigger to release the latch.
  • Under load: use an RF1322 spike to force the trigger down, keeping fingers clear of the trigger.
  • Secure: close the latch until it makes a positive click and locks in the closed position.

Inspection & Maintenance

  • Check for signs of overloading such as distorted or bent bails, latches or rivets. If found, replace the Triggersnap.
  • Check the trigger operates smoothly, the latch opens and clicks closed, and the spring positively returns the trigger to the closed position to lock the latch. Replace the Triggersnap if it does not operate correctly.
  • Flush the spring, bail bolt and rivets regularly with fresh water.
  • Inspect for atmospheric corrosion and "tea staining", especially if stored in lockers: a humid, warm, salty environment without fresh water rinsing leads to premature surface oxidation.
  • Clean with mild detergent, warm water and a soft cloth. For heavy grime or discolouration use a nylon or synthetic scouring pad (never steel) with warm soapy water or stainless steel polish; a mild citric acid cleaner followed by a fresh water rinse can be used for deeper cleaning.
  • Never use hydrochloric acid on stainless steel components: it causes severe corrosion and can lead to premature failure.
  • Lubricate the trigger and latch pin periodically with a silicon-based lubricant such as Ronstan Sailfast.
