Selden Carbon Pole Kit — Instructions

Safety

  • Cured carbon fibre gives sharp slivers: long sleeves and heavy duty gloves; barrier cream against carbon dust.
  • Safety goggles and a face mask when cutting, sanding or drilling; latex gloves when handling mixed adhesive.
  • A vacuum cleaner is highly recommended for frequent removal of dust.
  • All metal surfaces (including fastenings) that contact carbon fibre must be insulated.

  • All rivets 20mm from the edge of the tube. Rivet sizes: SC039 to SC077 ø4.8, SC088 to SC090 ø6.4.
  • Spacer shims: ø39 pole – one on each top quarter of the pole end curved sides plus two on the lower c/line; ø47 – on the curved sides; ø59 or ø61 – 4 on the adapter curved sides (3 if 4 is too tight).
  • Trip trigger outboard end: fit the trip line and exit box 505-069-11 (thumbknot, 1500mm / 700mm as drawn).

  • With 534-777 outboard ends keep carbon dust and aluminium debris out of the plunger: wipe the grease off before drilling, clean and re-grease after.
  • Release line L= POA; optional topping lift retract L= (2xPOA) - 400; downhaul loop 330mm x ø5mm HMPE; clip 301-039.
  • Drill for the lift eye and fit eye and backing plates; cut extra exit box holes with a router or Dremel.

TWARON® Wrap (595-411-E)

  • Improves chafe resistance: Type A poles have two wrapped areas, Type B one.
  • Standard position: wrap outer edge 40mm from the tube outer edge (stowage on the toe rail); move it aft to protect against forestay contact.
  • Mask both ends, spread 5~6 lines of marine silicone, twist the wrap on, clear the excess bead, pull off the tape and finish with the supplied black tape.

HMPE Pole Bridles (595-412-E)

  • Made from 100% HMPE rope: minimal stretch, kind to the pole when stowed.
  • Pre-assembly: locking eye splice through the pole end fitting (marks A and B at 200 and 100, C at 250; taper the short end by cutting 6 strands).
  • Final assembly: mark each line at E, 55% of section length from the end; tie to the central ring with a running knot, bury the tail 50mm and cut 10mm closer to the knot.
