  • Motor and gearbox sit inside the drum: only the cables pass through the deck.
  • Primarily for halyards and outhaul; any 8-14 line with a 5-10° entry angle.
  • Electric only – pair it with at least one manual winch so the line can be diverted if power is lost.
  • Connect only to a Selden winch MCU on the Power supply and SEL-Bus system (manual 597-275-E).

Mounting

  1. Dismantle the winch (6.1, steps 1-3). Tape the drilling template (597-291-E) aligned so the line enters tangential to the drive gear.
  2. Centre-punch the holes and pilot-drill with the 4mm bit.
  3. A, through deck: drill Ø7mm. B, into deck inserts (aluminium or stainless only): drill Ø5mm and tap M6X1.
  4. Open the cable hole to Ø14-Ø20 mm; countersink each screw hole approximately 3 mm deep.
  5. Degrease, fill the countersinks with marine sealant, feed the cables through and seat the winch without pinching a cable.
  6. M6 countersunk screws only, heads flush or slightly below the base; tighten crosswise to M6 = 7 Nm (B: with thread locker, never mixed with sealant).

Wiring & Buttons

  • Crimp connectors and fit the cables in the MCU: Grey=L3, Brown=L2, Orange=L1.
  • Primary buttons close to the winch, placed so they cannot be pressed by accident; configure via the SEL-Bus converter (597-275-E, ch. 2.7).
  • Self-tailing arm: undo the three top screws to rotate it towards the cockpit.
Button Speed
"1" Low
"2" Intermediate
"1+2" High

Take the line 3-4 turns clockwise, over the arm and into the jaws. Start with button 1. As a synchronized outhaul winch it starts with the furling mast "out" button.

Trouble Shooting

Problem Cause Solution
Drum oscillates back and forth instead of spinning Faulty winch connection at the MCU Reconnect the wires in the correct order (Grey L3, Brown L2, Orange L1)
Winch does not run at all SEL-Bus network, MCU or PSU installation Read the flashing LED fault codes on MCU and PSU; see manual 597-275-E

Frequent (at least 2 times a year)

  1. Undo the three top screws (5mm Allen key); remove top cover, self-tailing arm, locator bracket and drum.
  2. Remove roller bearing and washer; undo the five centre-hub screws (T30 or 5mm Allen key) and flip the hub to reach the gears.
  3. Check gears and ratchets; wipe off old grease, grease the gears, oil the pawls. The sealed, oil-filled inner compartment is not opened here.

Standard maintenance (at least every 2nd year): also remove circlip, washer and drive gear, and the four pawl-holder screws; clean with mild degreaser, replace worn pawls, springs and holders.

Extended: Oil Change & Seals

  • Needs gearbox oil 312-900-01 (200ml; 40ml per E40i), extended maintenance kit 471-057-11R, grease 312-501, pawl oil 312-709-01.
  • Replace lock ring and washer on the main gear; replace pawls, holders and springs; clean with white spirits.
  • Drain via the two oil plugs, refill with 40ml of gearbox oil, new O-rings; do not overtighten the plugs in the plastic thread.
  • Leaking seals: replace with seal kit 471-148-01R (motor cover seal, bottom seal and bearing, cable seals).
  • A grey bottom bearing must be replaced (manual 597-899); gold/brown is fine.

Replacing the Drum (597-566-E)

  1. Remove the 3 top screws, lift off top cover, arm, locator bracket and drum.
  2. Tap round the bottom of the self-tailer with a soft hammer until it comes off (bearing and spacer drop out).
  3. Bearing then spacer into the new drum; line up the drum tabs with the self-tailer holes, press on by hand and seat with the soft hammer.
  4. Refit the drum assembly and top screws.

Motor Cover (597-957-E)

  • Small radii along the three bolt channels = old cover, replace with kit 471-145-01R; large radii = latest version.
  • Let the winch stand upright, unused, for at least 12h so the oil settles.
  • Remove 2 top and 5 surrounding cover screws (some oil may escape – protect the deck), fit the new cover with its gasket and refit.
