System & Hydraulics

The double-groove luff foil is turned by a hydraulic motor driving a self-locking worm gear, controlled from a cockpit switch panel. Two hoses run from the motor to a through-deck fitting with a by-pass valve; quick couplings allow the drive unit to be removed. The forestay passes through the drive unit, which carries no forestay load; the torque is taken by the stem-head fitting. The rigging screw sits inside the drive-unit holding tube.

Value
Hydraulic motor Danfoss OML 12,5 cm3/rev or OML 20 cm3/rev
Max. recommended pressure 140 bar
Nominal speed 40 rpm at 10 litres/min (OML 12,5) or 20 litres/min (OML 20)
Normal working pressure (reefing / unfurling) 40 bar at 10 litres/min (OML 12,5) or 19 litres/min (OML 20)
Typical pump 24 volt, 1,5 kW (OML 12,5) or 3 kW (OML 20)
Hoses (below deck, not supplied) SAE 100R / ISO3949, min. 3/8", min. working pressure 140 bar, min. bend radius 150 mm (6"); threads G 3/8
Through-deck fitting Ø 60 mm hole through the deck (flange Ø 100 mm)
Stem-head torque (max. working load) 330 Nm (300 H), 725 Nm (400 H)
Rigging screw adjustment 100 mm (300 H), 110 mm (400 H)
  • Use an ecologically sound, biodegradable hydraulic oil; never mix fluids of different makes or types.
  • Blow all new hoses through with compressed air before fitting; mark hoses at the quick couplings – crossing them reverses the motor. Fit the protective covers whenever couplings are disconnected; always check the couplings are locked.
  • After installation: Reefing switch must turn the foil anti-clockwise, Unfurling switch clockwise; otherwise swap the yellow and green leads (or cross the hoses).
  • Send dimensions A and B (drive unit to through-deck fitting) to your dealer to have the motor hoses made up. Protect hoses and fitting from the anchor chain.

Stem-Head Fitting & Lower Toggle

The torsion-resistant lower toggle may be fitted athwartships or fore-and-aft. Check that the drive unit (max width 170 mm) clears the pulpit and anchor. Any added link or toggle must have at least the torque capacity required of the stem-head fitting.

Forestay & Luff Extrusion Calculation

WL = FL – T (rigging screw 50% extended; also deduct any extra link or toggle). E + F = WL – (A + B); E = largest number of 2400 mm extrusions shorter than E + F; F = top extrusion; G = top distance tube = F – deduction.

Furlex / stay T A + B G deduction
300 H Ø8 mm wire 360 mm 1300 mm 380 mm
300 H Ø10 mm wire 370 mm 1290 mm 400 mm
400 H Ø12 mm wire 490 mm 1350 mm 490 mm
400 H Ø14 mm wire 490 mm 1350 mm 490 mm
300 H Rod 7.5 360 mm 1350 mm 125 mm
300 H Rod 9.5 370 mm 1340 mm 125 mm
400 H Rod 11.1 490 mm 1420 mm 220 mm
400 H Rod 12.7 490 mm 1420 mm 220 mm
  • Example (300 H, Ø10 wire): FL 16.735 – 370 = WL 16.365; – 1.290 = 15.075; 6 profiles = 14.400; F = 675; G = 675 – 400 = 275.
  • Example (300 H, Rod 9.5, rod calculation sheet): 17650 – 370 = 17280; – 1340 = 15940; 14400; F = 1540; G = 1320 (the sheet deducts 220, as printed).
  • 300 H: F over 2000 mm → cut from a 2400 mm extrusion; 400–2000 mm → cut from the 2000 mm extrusion; under 400 mm → swap the top 2400 mm extrusion for the 2000 mm one (E – 400, F + 400).
  • 400 H: the top is normally cut from the 1700 mm (67") extrusion; if shorter than 700 mm (27 9/16") swap the top 2400 mm extrusion for the 1700 mm one (E – 700, F + 700).
  • Foil packs: 300 H one 1000 mm (39 3/8") extrusion with long joining sleeve, one 2000 mm (78 3/4"), 2400 mm extrusions and a 3 x 25 locking pin; 400 H one 1000 mm with long sleeve and bearing plug with bushes, one 1700 mm (67"), 5–8 off 2400 mm (94 1/2"); 400 H distance tube L = 2100 mm (82 11/16") at the sail feeder.

Forestay Terminal & Drive Unit

  • Chamfer the wire end and thread it from the top (twist anti-clockwise past snags); tape and cut at WL. Slide the drive unit over the 1000 mm extrusion from below.
  • Terminal M with washer over the wire, wedge on the core (core protrudes about 2 mm), strands spread evenly, former in Terminal F; check no strand lies in the wedge slot; locking adhesive and tighten hard (permanent).
  • Fit bushing and circular clip (bushing must rotate freely), then the rigging screw and lower toggle, fully extended for rigging.
  • Join drive unit and lower toggle with the clevis pin; fix the foil with the two stop screws (300 H: Torx 40, 400 H: Insex 8 mm) in the pre-drilled holes, locking adhesive, tighten hard.
  • 400H-Rod: drill two clearance holes in the top of the foil and fit the two-half top guard with locking adhesive.

Halyard, Tension & Sail

  • Halyard at least 10° from the forestay, otherwise use the halyard leads 508-128 (two supplied, fitted side by side; drill 5.2 / Ø 5.3 mm, greased self-tapping M6). Checklist: halyard angles out 5–10° with sail set.
  • Tension the forestay to max. 25% of its breaking load with the backstay tensioner (higher for a limited period).
  • Sail rolls onto the starboard side of the foil (sun strip on starboard). Turn the tack ring anti-clockwise to its stop, lash the prefeeder with max. 300 mm (12") of line, hoist in the starboard groove.
  • Sail luff more than 500 mm (19") shorter than max. luff length: fit a permanent wire head pendant.

Sail Measurements (mm)

Furlex Extrusion Groove width A Groove Ø B Max luff tape Cut-back CB F E F+E
300 H 39/27 3.0 Ø 7.5 Ø 6.5 80 550 490 1040
400 H 48/34 3.0 Ø 8 Ø 6.5 100 650 675 1345

Max. luff length = FL – (F + E). Webbing at head and tack; the luff tape hard line should end above the sail feed. A high-cut clew keeps a constant sheet angle when reefing.

Operation & Manual Override

  • Unfurl: haul in the sheet while pressing Unfurling; stop when fully open – keeping the switch pressed starts furling the wrong way.
  • Furl / reef: press Reefing while easing the sheet under some resistance; always roll in at least 2–3 revolutions. The tack ring turns about one revolution freely to flatten the reefed sail.
  • Manual: switch the by-pass valve on the through-deck fitting to "Winch handle" and use a standard winch handle; clockwise reefs. The motor cannot start in this position. Never leave the handle in the drive unit.

Maintenance & Dismantling

  • Rinse with fresh water, especially the lower unit and tack swivel – the most important service item. Silicone-free polish or wax on anodized surfaces.
  • Grease sparingly with Furlex grease 312-501: both halyard swivel bearings (inject into the ball-race gaps), tack ring top bearing (gap) and bottom bearing (hole in the centre of the tack ring).
  • Drive unit gearing: lithium grease SKF LGEP 2/04; service (cleaning, glands, O-rings, re-greasing) at intervals of no more than 5 years, more often for charter or circumnavigation.
  • Terminal threads are locked: heat Terminal F to approx 100°C (212°F) to unscrew. With Ø 14 mm wire the male terminal is larger than the foil – unrig, or saw the wire above it (stay shortened by 80 mm). Seized connecting plates: drill out with Ø 8 mm.
  • Hydraulic motor: remove only if the winch handle cannot turn the unit or the motor must be replaced (4 Allen screws 5 mm, 3 dismantling screws 2.5 mm); cover and motor are one unit. Do not dismantle the halyard swivel.
  • Store rinsed, dry and ventilated; never wrap damp in plastic. The drive unit detaches for separate storage.
