Selden Furlex 500TDH — Owner's Manual

System, Dimensions & Sail Data

Basic pack: lower swivel with toggle terminal, halyard swivel, motor unit, through-deck fitting with template, torque tube, adjuster, two 5/16" rigging screws for torque handling, emergency line driver and manual. Foil packs (luff extrusions and connecting plates) are sized to the forestay length; joining sleeves and the chosen rod seat go to the rod manufacturer before heading. The short adjuster (100mm stroke) suits Selden rod seats -40/-48 and -60 and is integrated in the torque tube.

All dimensions in mm. Allow 100mm for the emergency line driver.

Halyard angle 10–15°, never less than 10° (the sail chapter says 5–10°, as printed). At least 50 mm between halyard swivel and top guard with the sail tensioned.

Lower Bearing, Drive Unit & Torque Support

1. Fit the through-deck fitting against the aft edge of the hole (markings A centre it).
2. Thin bead of rigging-screw oil on the eye/toggle terminal thread; attach it to the stem-head fitting and secure the split pin.
3. Remove screws A from the motor unit, grease the drive shaft at B and fit the motor unit over the terminal without damaging the internal bearings.
4. With the motor unit supported, insert the bearing assembly from above and turn toggle C to engage the thread; take care as the torque-transfer keys and grooves D engage. Continue to a gap of ~5mm between tack ring and deck fitting.
5. Align two carrier holes with the centre shaft, fit screws A with locking adhesive and tighten firmly. Check the tack ring turns freely.
6. A torque stay is mandatory: fit the two rigging screws from the bracket on the aft face of the motor unit to the boat structure. The starboard screw takes the pulling force (the sail furls to starboard), the port one supports. Attachment points: safe working load 5 kN, breaking load 10kN.

• Luff (rod): feed from the top starting with the 580mm extrusion, connecting plate and long joining sleeve flush (B); push up the long sleeve and bearing plug until flush, press in the bushes; insert distance-tube halves and push each short sleeve in about 150mm. Fit top guard and eye terminal (locking adhesive on the grub screw).
• Feed on the torque tube (luff screws removed) and mark the luff section 62 mm from its edge; fit the adjuster with locking adhesive on the rod bush thread.
• Rigging: attach at the masthead then at the lower bearing (split pin ~20°); remove the locking plates, slide down the torque tube, align marking A with Allen screw B, refit the locking plates with locking adhesive and tighten hard; fit the luff screws. Tension the forestay to 20% of breaking load (approx. 15% of backstay breaking load on a masthead rig).

Hydraulic Motor & Hoses

• Drive unit and motor tested before delivery. Danfoss OMM 20 cm3/revolution, maximum recommended pressure p=140 bar.
• Q=20 litres/min gives n=40 rpm; normal reefing/unfurling load p=40 bar at Q 19 litres/min. A 24-volt pump unit of P=3 kW is usually sufficient.
• By-pass gland 541-015 for emergency operation.
• Hoses below deck not supplied: connecting threads G 3/8"; SAE 100R7/-ISO3949, minimum dimension 1/2", minimum working pressure 140 bar, minimum bending radius 150 mm (6"). Blow new hoses through with compressed air; cap couplings when disconnected.

Maintenance & Dismantling

• Inspect once a year; wash with fresh water and mild detergent; replace halyard leads at 50% wear.
• Lower unit: remove the Allen screw to reach the main bearing, press in water-resistant grease, rotate half a turn and add more. Marking A on the torque tube must align with Allen screw 1 on refitting.
• Halyard swivel: bring it down to the sail feeder and grease both ball bearings.
• Disconnecting: secure the rig with a halyard, support the luff, remove the luff screws and locking plates, slide up the torque tube, remove clevis and split pin.
• Luff: remove top guard and eye terminal, prise out the bushings, pull out the distance-tube halves and pull the stay about 150mm per join to release the sleeves. On older systems the connecting plates may have to be drilled out (ø8.5mm) and replaced.
