Selden Furlex Halyard Attachment — Instructions

Why and How to Check

The MkII Furlex halyard swivels have an attachment point that brings the halyard shackle closer to the luff extrusion than earlier versions. With too small a halyard angle the shackle can chafe the extrusion.

  • Hoist the sail fully, rotate the luff extrusion and check the clearance between halyard shackle and luff (point A).
  • If it is too small, use one of the three fixes below.

Three Fixes

Halyard / situation Fix
1. Halyard with loop or eye-splice Replace the shackle with the soft shackle supplied with the halyard swivel. Inspect the HMPE loop and soft shackle for chafing at regular intervals.
2. Knotted shackle, or wire halyard with fixed eye The angle between halyard and luff extrusion must be >15°. Use the halyard leads supplied in the Furlex pack to get it, and make sure the shackle does not touch the extrusion.
3. Sail too short A short sail brings the shackle closer to the extrusion. Fit a wire or HMPE strop between the head of the sail and the halyard swivel to bring the swivel up; fit it permanently to the head of the sail.
