Compatible Rod Sizes & Limits

Furlex Forestay Rod dimension Max. righting moment at 30° heel (Nm) masthead / partial Approx. displacement (tons) masthead / partial
200 S 6, 7, 8 mm -8 (Ø 5.7 mm), -10 (Ø 6.4 mm), -12 (Ø 7.1 mm), -15 (Ø 7.5 mm) 37.000 / 40.000 7.5 / 8.0
300 S 8, 10 mm -12, -15, -17 (Ø 8.4 mm), -22 (Ø 9.5 mm) 70.000 / 75.000 14 / 15
400 S 12, 14 mm -22, -30 (Ø 11.1 mm), -40 (Ø 12.7 mm) 180.000 / 190.000 28 / 30
500 S 16 mm -40, -48 (Ø 14.3 mm) 230.000 / 250.000 38 / 40
  • All sizes are listed for Navtec, OYS (Riggarna) and BSI rod. With OYS -15 on the 200 S the rod male part is too large to pass through the extrusions: the upper head is cold-headed after the stay is pulled through, so the extrusion must be 200 mm (8') shorter than the stay at the top (less sail space) and the system is built by the rod manufacturer.
  • OYS upper eye terminals must be the MYENA type (type MYEA cannot be used).
  • Screws on halyard swivel and lower bearing: M 5 T 25, M 6 T 30, M 8 T 40 (Torx); M 10 8 mm, M 12 10 mm (Allen).
  • Section 3.3.2 of the PDF gives the top eye terminal dimensions (TET / TED / TEL) for each rod size and make.

Assembly

Rod (by the rod supplier)

  1. Cut the rod to WL, form and fit the upper head; fit the eye part temporarily only.
  2. Thread on, from the top: the short joining sleeves (one per 2400 mm extrusion), the long joining sleeve (locking-pin hole towards the socket), 400/500 S bearing plug, socket and seat, each oriented as in the drawing.
  3. Cold-head the lower end and pack the stay with the completed calculation tables.

Luff & lower unit

  • Unscrew the upper eye part and tape the thread. Push each extrusion on from the top over the short sleeves (taped up near the top terminal).
  • 200/300 S: 1000 mm extrusion with long connecting plate and sail feeder, long sleeve flush with the top of the sail feeder; locking pin with locking adhesive. 400/500 S: long sleeve + long plate in a 2400 mm extrusion, 2100 mm (82 11/16") distance tube, bearing plug holes aligned, bushes pressed in.
  • Fit each further extrusion with sleeve and plate; each distance tube ends about half a sleeve length (J) from the extrusion end; the top tube flush with the top.
  • 400 S with -30 or -40: remove the conical top adapter and slide it down the luff before fitting the lower unit (the socket will not pass through it).
  • Halyard swivel down to the sail feeder (taped), top guard screws until they bottom.
  • Discard socket wedge and former; 2–3 drops of locking adhesive and tighten the lower terminal permanently; fit the upper eye permanently.
  • Spacer bush (200/300 S terminal part) or rigging screw extended 50% with all flats aligned; 400 S Ø12 rigging screw uses the adapter tube. Clevis and split pin opened approx. 20°.
  • Adapter screws: 200/300 S into the extrusion holes; 400/500 S align the marking with the adapter top and use locking adhesive, tighten hard with the 10 mm Allen key.
  • Line drum halves (fit after rigging), line guide midway between the flanges and aligned to the first lead block.

Dismantling Notes

  • Pull the upper terminal to bring rod, sleeves and distance tubes out together (200/300 S: push out the locking pin first; 400/500 S: push the stay in until about 50 mm (2") inside the 1000 mm extrusion and knock out the bushes).
  • If corrosion prevents this, drill out the connectors: Ø 6 mm (15/64") for 200 S, Ø 8 mm for 300 S, 400 S and 500 S.
  • Top guard and halyard swivel will not pass over the upper eye on Navtec -10, -12/200, -22, -30, -40 and Riggarna -9.5 mm, -40, -48 unless the eye part is removed; on Navtec -48 / Riggarna -22 the guard's internal flange must be filed. Alternatively remove them from below.
