Rod & Luff Extrusion Calculation

Table 1 – Rod length

  • FLD = FL + CH (forestay fixing hole in the deck fitting to deck level, along the stay); FLD also matches the rigging-diagram distance.
  • NFL = FLD – TDH (TD deduction): 200 TD 145 mm, 300 TD 170 mm, 400 TD 250 mm.
  • WL = NFL – T – H (links or extra toggles).
  • Example (200 TD -8): 12.700 + 50 – 145 = 12.605; – 70 = 12.535.
Furlex Rod Navtec / OYS / BSI T without rigging screw A+B

400 TD -40 (ø 12.7 mm) • / • / • 135 1025

In the A+B table the 200 TD -15 row shows Navtec as "–" (as printed); the T table shows it with a dot.

Table 2 – Luff extrusion

  • C+D = WL – (A+B); C = max. number of 2400 mm (94 1/2") extrusions shorter than C+D.
  • D normally cut from the 2000 mm (78 3/4") extrusion (200/300 TD) or 1700 mm (67") extrusion (400 TD).
  • 200/300 TD: if D is shorter than 400 mm (15 3/4"), swap the top 2400 mm extrusion for the 2000 mm one; C –400 mm, D +400 mm.
  • 400 TD: if D is shorter than 700 mm (27 9/16"), swap in the 1700 mm extrusion; the joint moves down 700 mm (the adjustment lines in this box repeat the 200/300 TD 400 mm values, as printed).
  • E = D – 100 mm (4") 200 TD; D – 125 mm (5") 300 TD; D – 220 mm (8 5/8") 400TD (space for the two-piece top guard, new 2020).
  • Example: 12.535 – 1.020 = 11.515; C 9.600 (4 extrusions); D 1.915; E 1.815.

Assembly

  • The rod supplier cuts the rod, forms and temporarily fits the upper eye, threads on (from the top) the short sleeves (one per extrusion in region C, which can include a 2000 mm one), the long sleeve (locking-pin hole towards the socket), socket and seat, then cold-heads the lower end.
  • Push each extrusion on from the top over the taped-up short sleeves; short lower extrusion with long connecting plate and sail feeder, long sleeve flush with the top of the sail feeder; connect a 2400 mm extrusion, sleeve flush with the lower extrusion's lower edge; locking pin with locking fluid.
  • Each distance tube about half a joining-sleeve length (J) from the extrusion end; top tube roughly flush with the top.
  • Halyard swivel to the sail feeder (taped). 200/300TD: top guard with two pre-fitted screws. 400TD: drill two clearance holes in the forward end of the extrusion, fit the two top-guard halves round the stay with locking adhesive, insert and screw in.
  • Discard wedge and former, 2–3 drops of locking fluid on the lower terminal (permanent); fit the upper eye permanently; check FL.
  • Mark the lower extrusion 200 TD 53 mm (2"), 300 TD 66 mm (2 5/8"), 400 TD 79 mm (3 1/8") to align the adapter, then slide adapter and adapter tube on.
  • Line drum halves (after rigging): oval flange to the cut-out, both clips engaged; line guard slid on from aft and turned half a revolution, locking block clipped in, line guide midway between the flanges and aligned to the first lead block.

Dismantling Notes

  • Remove the upper eye part, knock out the locking pin at the lower end of the 800 mm (200TD) / 770 mm (300TD) / 660 mm (400TD) extrusion, then pull the lower terminal to bring rod, sleeves and tubes out together.
  • If seized, drill out the connectors: Ø 6 mm (15/64") for 200 TD, Ø 8 mm for 300 TD and 400 TD.
  • Top guard and halyard swivel will not pass the upper eye on several Navtec / Rigging sizes unless the eye part is removed; on Navtec -48 / Rigging -22 mm file the guard's internal flange, or remove them from below.
