- Tools: screwdriver, hacksaw, 2 adjustable spanners (one small or size 16 fixed), channel-joint pliers, tape, file, 20 m steel tape, knife, permanent marker; for the leads a heavy-duty Phillips screwdriver and drill.
Mast & deck attachment
- Masthead box: always via a toggle. Selden triple-combi fractional fitting: connect directly. Selden "0-22" / "0-35" fittings: connect directly. T-terminal: fit a T/fork toggle.
- The lower end has a fork toggle as standard; check the drum clears pulpit, bow anchor and deck fittings. Raise the drum with toggles or links, always with a toggle at the lower end.

Wire & Luff Extrusion Calculation
Forestay wire
- Determine mast rake with fore and backstays tensioned; slacken the backstay and pull the masthead forward on the genoa halyard (D shackle or tied, not the snap shackle); remove the forestay without changing its rigging screw.
- T (lower terminal): 4 mm wire –45 mm, 5 mm –55 mm, 6 mm –70 mm; also deduct any link or extra toggle.
- Example ø5: FL 9.675 – 55 = WL 9.620. Mark WL with a permanent pen; do not cut yet.
Luff extrusion
- A+B: 4 mm and 5 mm wire –1340 mm, 6 mm –1290 mm; C = number of 2400 mm extrusions shorter than C+D.
- D longer than 2000 mm: use a 2400 mm extrusion; between 400 and 2000 mm: use the 2000 mm extrusion; shorter than 400 mm: replace the top full-length extrusion with the 2000 mm one (joint moves 400 mm down: C –400 mm, D +400 mm) and cut the top from a 2400 mm extrusion.
- E (top distance tube): 4 and 5 mm wire D–120 mm; 6 mm wire D–200 mm.
- Example ø5: 9.620 – 1.340 = 8.280; C 7.200 (3 extrusions); D 1.080; E 960.
Assembly
- Short connecting spring (L=103 mm) in the 1000 mm extrusion, large hook at the free end (90 mm / 20 mm positions as drawn); engage it in the lower bearing assembly and push joint sleeve and distance tube 50 mm into the extrusion until they bottom.
- Connecting spring L = 144 mm in each 2400 mm extrusion; distance tube buried about half a joint-sleeve length; the 50 mm gap at the first join is the sail feed (spacer fitted later). Connect the rest per the table.
- Halyard swivel down to the sail-feeder gap (taped); top guard with its two pre-fitted screws.
- Wire: remove eye, wedge and former; feed the wire from the top (turn anti-clockwise if it catches); cut so it protrudes approx. 30-50 mm; wedge over the core, re-lay the strands, core protruding 2 mm; former in the eye, screw on, check no strand is in the wedge slot; 2 or 3 drops of locking adhesive and tighten hard. On 6 mm wire about half the swaged fitting is exposed.
- Prefeeder: hook on the rubber cord, cord through the starboard groove and the slot in the lower bearing; tension hard and tie the prefeeder 300 mm from the slot.
- Spacer: press it onto the joint sleeve in the 50 mm gap from the front and give it half a turn.
- Line drum: fit the two upper flange halves (with labels), feed the line through the line guide and the oval hole until just past the sighting hole, tighten the locking screw hard; fit the line guide over the wire terminal, then the lower flange halves. The line guard must not touch the drum. The furling line must exit on the port side; when the largest sail is furled no more than 3-5 turns should be left.
Halyard Leads, Sail & Sailing
Halyard & sail
- The halyard should form at least 10° with the forestay; otherwise run it through the bronze halyard lead 508-159 (Selden masts: 210 mm and 100 mm below the halyard exit, 5–10°). Inspect leads annually; replace at 50% wear. Drill with the 5.3 mm bit, self-tapping M6 screws greased, insulating sheet under each lead.
- Stanchion blocks fit 25 mm ø stanchions (ball-and-socket; fair-lead only).
- Turn the tack ring anti-clockwise before attaching the tack; hoist in the starboard groove. Equal luff lengths for all genoas (5–10°); fit wire pennants by testing on board, talurit-spliced to the sail.
- At least 20 mm between the top of the halyard swivel and the top guard with the sail fully tensioned (the pre-sailing checklist says 50 mm, as printed).
- Extrusion 26 x 17 mm, groove 3.0 mm with 6 mm ø; recommended max. 5 mm luff rope / tape (max. 4 mm "hard" line). UV strip on the starboard side.
Sailing & maintenance
- Racing: unroll the line (note the turns), remove flange halves and line guide, lower the halyard swivel to the bottom.
- Reef at least 5 – 6 turns, slipping the sheet from the winch; normally hand power is enough – check for obstructions before using a winch.
- Wash with fresh water, rinse detergent away, silicone-free polish on the extrusions. Grease slots 1–4; internal roller bearing via screw 5 while turning terminal 6; slot 7 at the wire terminal bearing. Never wrap a damp Furlex in plastic.
- Tension the forestay to max. 25% of its ultimate load (20% of the ultimate backstay load).
- Dismantling: heat the eye to approx. 100°C (212°F), refit it 2-3 turns and hit it hard along the stay; cut protruding strands approx. 5 mm; move joint sleeves 50-60 mm to separate the extrusions. A shorter stay can be compensated by 5% more tension (max. 25%) or an eye/fork toggle. Do not dismantle the halyard swivel or lower bearing (uncaged balls).
