Assembly, length calculations, operation, service and the complete illustrated spare-parts list for the Selden Furlex Type B Mk II jib furler (ø6, ø7 and ø8 mm forestays), plus the 1986 multilingual edition.

Kit & Attachments
Discontinued model – spare parts no longer available (stamped on the documents). Documents and part numbers as printed, for identification and service.
Furlex Type B Mk II kit
- Halyard swivel and lower bearing part (with snap shackles), 2 line drum halves, line guide arm, line guard with screw, furling line, 2 halyard leads 508-135 with 4 screws and insulator sheets (the parts list gives 508-159), 4 stanchion blocks.
- Drill bit ø5,3 mm, luff extrusion sample, prefeeder with rubber cord and hook, locking adhesive, grease, top guard with 2 screws, forestay wire.
- Packing tube: 1000 mm and 2000 mm extrusions with distance tube + joining sleeve, 3—6 x 2400 mm extrusions, sail feeder, long connecting spring per 2400 / 2000 mm extrusion, short spring for the 1000 mm extrusion.
- Tools: screwdriver, hacksaw, 2 adjustable spanners (size 16), "poly-grip" pliers, tape, file, 20 m steel tape, knife; heavy-duty Phillips screwdriver and drill for the leads.
Mast & deck attachment
- Masthead box: always via a toggle. Selden triple-combi fractional fitting: 6 or 7 mm wire with a fork/eye toggle, 8 mm wire to the existing toggle. Selden "0—35 / 0—50": connect directly. T-terminal: T/fork toggle.
- Keep the spinnaker halyard clear (run it through halyard lead 508-135). Lower fork toggle standard; raise the drum with toggles or links, toggle at the lower end.
| Toggle | ø6 mm | ø7 mm | ø8 mm |
|---|---|---|---|
| Eye/fork (Hasselfors no.) | 174-104 H=40 (80254) | 174-105 H=45 (80255) | 174-106 H=50 (80256) |
| Fork/fork | 517-046-02 H=40 | 517-047-02 H=40 | 517-048-02 H=50 |
| T/fork | 174-122 H=80 | 174-123 H=90 | 174-124 H=100 |
Wire & Luff Extrusion Calculation
Forestay wire
- Measure FL with just enough tension to keep it straight. T: ø6 and ø7 mm wire — 70 mm, ø8 mm — 80 mm; also deduct any link or extra toggle.
- Example ø7: 11.670 – 70 = 11.600. Mark WL; do not cut yet (careful opening the wire coil).
Luff extrusion
- A+B: ø6 mm — 1330 mm, ø7 mm — 1335 mm, ø8 mm — 1345 mm. C = number of 2400 mm extrusions shorter than C+D; D normally from the 2000 mm extrusion (file the cut edge).
- If D is shorter than 400 mm, replace the top 2400 mm extrusion with the 2000 mm one: C –400 mm, D +400 mm.
- E: ø6 mm D—200, ø7 and ø8 mm D—210.
- Example ø7: 11.600 – 1.335 = 10.265; C 9.600 (4 extrusions); D 665; E 455.
Assembly
- Short connecting spring L=103 mm in the 1000 mm extrusion (70 mm / 20 mm as drawn), large hook outside; secure with the joining sleeve. 144 mm spring in the upper hole; take the 200 mm joining sleeve out of one 2400 mm extrusion (it goes in the 2000 mm one) and connect: a 50 mm gap is left for the sail feeder.
- Fit the two extrusions to the lower-bearing adapter (spring in the internal hole); the 2400 mm distance tube is buried approximately 100 mm. Connect the rest per the table; halyard swivel to the sail-feeder gap; top guard with two screws until they bottom.
- Wire: feed from the top (turn counter-clockwise if it catches), cut so it protrudes approx. 30-40 mm, wedge over the core (strands un-laid clockwise seen from below), core 2 mm proud, former in the eye, check the strands, 2 or 3 drops of locking adhesive and tighten quite hard.
- Prefeeder: cord through the starboard groove and the slot in the lower bearing part; tension hard and tie the prefeeder 300 mm from the slot.
- Sail feeder: connector in place, slip the feeder on from underneath until all 4 clips engage.
- Line drum: line through the line-guide eye and the upper hole in a drum half (overhand knot), press the halves together with the text up, fit line guard and guiding arm clear of the drum. The line must exit on the port side; max. 5 — 8 turns with the largest sail furled.
Halyard Leads, Sail & Sailing
Halyard & sail
- Halyard-to-forestay angle at least 10°; otherwise use the halyard lead 508-135 (Selden masts: 250 mm and 110 mm below the halyard exit, 5–10°). A sheave box below the head box avoids chafe on new masts.
- 4 stanchion blocks for ø25 mm stanchions or pulpit (lead block only; use a stronger block for heavy loads).
- Equal luff lengths for all genoas; pennant by testing on board, talurit-spliced to the head. At least 50 mm between the halyard swivel and top guard with the sail tensioned.
- Fig. 16:2 sail dimensions: 390 mm, FL–730 mm, 1000 mm, 340 mm, 60 mm (see the PDF drawing). Extrusion 31 x 20 mm, groove 3,0 mm, ø6 mm; recommended max. ø5 mm luff rope (ø4 mm hard line). UV strip on starboard; tack ring turned anti-clockwise; starboard groove.
Sailing & maintenance
- Racing: unroll the line, remove line guard, arm and drum (force the halves apart 3—4 mm with two screwdrivers), remove the sail feeder, lower the swivel, refit the feeder.
- Reefing: furl at least 5 — 6 turns. The rotating tack feature is not fitted on units for the U.S and U.K markets (as printed). Avoid using a winch.
- Grease slots 1–4, internal bearing via screw 5 / terminal 6, slot 7. Rinse thoroughly; never wrap a damp Furlex in plastic.
- Forestay tension max. 25% of its ultimate load (20% of the ultimate backstay load).
- Dismantling: heat the eye to approx. 100°C (212°F), refit 3 turns only and hit it along the stay; cut strands approx. 5 mm; push the joining sleeve 50 — 60 mm in with a ø13 mm pin or tube. Shortening: +5% tension (max. 25%) or an eye/fork toggle. Never dismantle the swivels.

1986 Edition (595-537-SET)
The third PDF is the earlier Swedish / English / German edition of the Type B manual (Sept. 86). Its wire calculation is the same (ø6 and ø7 mm –70 mm, ø8 mm –80 mm; example 11.670 → 11.600); its T-terminal toggle table lists 174-122 (ø6, H 80), 174-123 (ø7, H 90), 174-124 (ø8, H 100) and 174-121 (ø6 mm / ø5 mm T-term., H 70).
