Wire & Luff Extrusion Calculation

Deduction Type C ø8 mm Type C ø10 mm Type D ø12 mm Type D ø14 mm
T (lower wire terminal) 85 mm 95 mm 115 mm 140 mm
A+B (fixed) 1415 mm 1430 mm 1500 mm 1530 mm (printed "ø12")
E (top distance tube) D—230 D—250 D—300 D—350
Wire protruding before the terminal approx. 40 mm approx. 50 mm approx. 60 mm approx. 60 mm
  • C = number of 2400 mm extrusions shorter than C+D; D normally from the 2000 mm extrusion. If D is shorter than 400 mm, swap the top 2400 mm extrusion for the 2000 mm one: C –400 mm, D +400 mm.
  • Example ø10 (Type C): FL 16.735 – 95 = WL 16.640; – 1.430 = 15.210; C 14.400 (6 extrusions); D 810; E 560.

Assembly

  1. Type C: short connecting spring (L = 64 mm) in the 1000 mm extrusion, fit it to the lower-bearing adapter (spring in the internal hole) and push sleeve and tube to the bottom; join a 2400 mm extrusion with the long spring (L = 139 mm), leaving the sail-feeder gap; distance tube in about ≈125 mm.
  2. Type D: the long joining sleeve runs through the whole 1000 mm extrusion. Join 1000 + 2400 with the long spring (L = 139 mm), short spring (L = 64 mm) at the lower end of the 1000 mm extrusion, then fit to the adapter; tube in about ≈150 mm.
  3. Connect the remaining extrusions per the form; halyard swivel to the sail-feeder gap (taped); top guard with its two screws.
  4. Wire: feed from the top, cut to the protrusion in the table, wedge over the core, core 2 mm proud, former in the eye, check the strands, 2 or 3 drops of locking adhesive and tighten quite hard.
  5. Prefeeder: tie it 300 mm from the slot with the cord tensioned hard. Sail feeder: press the connector on the joining sleeve, hook on and screw the feeder.
  6. Line drum: Type C halves clip together, text up; Type D halves fitted with the attached screws. Line guard and arm clear of the drum, tighten hard. The line exits on the port side; max. 5 — 8 turns with the largest sail furled.

Halyard Leads, Sail & Sailing

Halyard & sail

  • Halyard-to-forestay angle at least 10°; otherwise halyard lead 508-128 (Selden masts: 300 mm and 130 mm below the halyard exit, 5—10°).
  • Stanchion blocks for ø25 mm stanchions: Type C ball-and-socket block, Type D stainless lead blocks.
  • At least 50 mm between halyard swivel and top guard with the sail tensioned. Sail drawing (fig. 16:2): C 540 / D 620 mm, C FL–960 / D FL–1140 mm, 1000 mm, C 420 / D 520 mm, tack C 80 / D 100 mm.
  • Extrusion C 40 x 27 mm, D 50 x 34 mm; groove 3,0 mm, C ø7 mm / D ø8 mm; recommended max. ø6 mm luffrope (max. ø5 mm hard line). UV strip on starboard; tack ring anti-clockwise; starboard groove.

Sailing & maintenance

  • Racing: Type C force the drum halves apart 3—4 mm; Type D remove the screws. Remove the sail feeder and lower the swivel.
  • Reefing: at least 5 — 6 turns; rotating tack not fitted on U.S and U.K market units (as printed). Avoid furling with a winch.
  • Grease slots 1–4, internal bearing via screw 5 / terminal 6, slot 7. Forestay tension max. 25% of its ultimate load (20% of the ultimate backstay load).
  • Dismantling: heat the eye to approx. 100°C (212°F), refit 3 turns only and hit it along the stay; cut strands approx. 5 mm; push the joining sleeve 50 — 60 mm with a ø17 mm pin or tube; Type C: twist and push the distance tube back about 40 mm. Never dismantle the swivels.
