Selden Furling Mast RB/RC Tack Assembly Replacement — Service Manual

Why the Tack Assembly Fails

The tack assembly is where the sail attaches to the luff extrusion. Serious operating errors, such as furling without releasing the outhaul or running the mast motor against it, put excessive torque into the system. The tack assembly is deliberately the weakest part of the furling system, because it is fairly easy to replace.

Removing the Old Tack Assembly

  1. Remove the two port-side covers of the access hole.
  2. Unscrew the lock screw to loosen the locking tube.
  3. Push the locking tube up to uncover the tensioning screw.
  4. Release luff extrusion tension: winch handle in the line driver, hold the extrusion through the access hole above the tensioning screw, turn the line driver anti-clockwise.
  5. Remove the clevis pin.
  6. Remove the adapter.
  7. With pliers, pull out the split pin (Ø 3,7x50).
  8. Pull down the wheel and take it out through one of the access holes.
  9. Lift the tack assembly out through the upper access hole.
  10. If necessary, remove the adapter from the drive unit.

Fitting the New Tack Assembly

  1. Take the new tack assembly apart.
  2. Fit the locking tube to the sail feeder (luff extrusion) with the screw hole and label down.
  3. Apply rigging screw oil to the tensioning screw.
  4. Enter the tack assembly and wheel through the upper access hole and screw it onto the tensioning screw.
  5. Fit the wheel, push it up against the tack hook and fit the split pin in the hole under the wheel.
  6. Fit the adapter and attach the tack assembly to the drive unit.
  7. Tension the luff extrusion (see instruction 597-828-E).
  8. Slide the locking tube down to lock the luff extrusion and secure it with the locking screw.

Check: rotate the luff extrusion with the winch handle in the drive unit and confirm it works.
