How the Pump Station Works
Mounted in the cockpit and connected by hoses to cylinders such as backstay / halyard tensioners and boom vangs. The handle is dual-action (it pumps oil on both strokes); a gauge shows the pressure in the active circuit. Two flow rates switch automatically: fast adjustment at low load, lower handle force at high load. The switch-over pressure and the maximum pressure (relief valve) are user-adjustable. Opening the release valve returns oil from the cylinder to the tank.

All high-pressure outlets come with 1/8" BSP adapters 585-600 fitted; with the caps removed, 585-606/-607/-608 fit directly. Selden backstay / halyard tensioners have 585-600 adapters fitted and need straight 1/8" fittings such as 585-606 for space reasons. Selden vangs have ¼" or 3/8" ports in the fork, delivered with adapters to BSP 1/8". The manifold has a high-pressure inlet (plugged at delivery) for the optional electric pump.
Installation
Have the system professionally installed by people experienced in marine hydraulics. Keep clear of a suspected leak: fluid jetting through the skin is dangerous – get medical help immediately.
- Mount the tank as high as possible relative to the pump station; function is not guaranteed with the tank more than 1m below the station.
- Secure all hoses and allow lengths for large-radius bends. All high-pressure hoses must be rated for 345 bar and professionally assembled.
- All pump-station hose ports are BSP threads.
Connecting hoses (1- and 4-function)
- High-pressure hose(s) from the cylinder(s) to the ⅛ inch port(s) (A): torque 19 Nm.
- Low-pressure hose from the reservoir to the ¼ inch port "T in" (B): torque 34 Nm.
- Low-pressure hose from the station back to the reservoir on the ¼ inch port "T out" (C): torque 34 Nm.
- Don't squeeze the gauge hose (D) while connecting.
- Port (E) is only for the optional electric pump: leave it plugged otherwise.
- Four-function: check unused high-pressure ports (A) are plugged.
Reservoir & air bleeding
The reservoir has three NPT ⅜ inch ports: use nylon fittings 585-638/-639 with Teflon tape, hose clamps 585-306/-307, and seal unused ports with nylon plug 585-610.
- Connect all low- and high-pressure hoses.
- Fill the tank to 2/3 level.
- Open the release valve.
- Pump the handle back and forth 40 times to circulate oil through the low-pressure circuit.
- Close the release valve and check the oil level.
- For each cylinder: rod extended (minimum oil in the cylinder / vang), disconnect at the fitting, pump carefully until oil exits, retighten.
Operation & Adjustments
Controls: (A) selector valve, (B) high/low speed switch-pressure adjustment, (C) max pump pressure adjustment, (D) pressure release screw.
-
Increasing pressure: close the pressure release screw by turning it gently clockwise to its end position (too hard can damage the needle valve seat). On the four-function station, select the correct circuit with the selector valve. Pump the handle back and forth.
-
Decreasing pressure: select the circuit, then open the pressure release screw anti-clockwise; oil returns from the cylinder to the tank.
-
Max pump pressure: 4 mm hex key; set to 345 bar at delivery. Clockwise increases, anti-clockwise decreases. Don't force it against the end stop (internal valves can be damaged) and don't unscrew more than 3 revolutions from the innermost position (leakage).
-
High / low speed switch pressure: 4 mm hex key on the speed-switch valve; clockwise raises the switch-over pressure, anti-clockwise lowers it. Same limits: no force at the end stop, max 3 revolutions out.
Service & Maintenance
- Rinse with fresh water at regular intervals. If you use detergent, rinse off every trace – most detergents corrode aluminium. Silicone-free wax protects the surfaces.
- Have the station serviced by a professional at intervals of no more than five years in normal use; more often for charter or circumnavigation.
- Warranty: 2 years (MKII), valid only when installed, operated and maintained per the manual; void if repaired by anyone not authorized by Selden.
Earlier MK1 Pump Station
The MK1 works the same way and has the same 345 bar maximum, 20,1 / 5,6 cm^3 per stroke and the same operation and service rules. Weight 4-function / 1-function: 4100 / 3250 g. Oil: ISO VG 46 (alternatives listed: Castrol Hyspin AWH-M 46, Shell Tellus S2 V 46).
-
Ports: high pressure HC1 (1-function) or HC1–4 (4-function), 1/8" BSP; low pressure LC4 and LC5 ¼" BSP, plus LC6 1/8" BSP on the 4-function. Plug unused high-pressure ports with 585-615 + 585-616.
-
Tank: ports LC1, LC2, LC3 (NPT 3/8); 8 mounting holes dia 9mm; W=196 mm, vertical hole spacing 47.5 mm; plug unused ports with 585-610.
-
Hose H1 (pump → tensioner / vang): 585-616 + 585-611 + coupling 540-911/-912/-913 + clamp 540-919 + hose 540-965 + clamp 540-919 + coupling 585-606/-607/-608.
-
Low-pressure hoses L1–L4: Push-Lok hose 585-700 with nipples 585-614 at each end; L1 to the tank via adapter 585-623 (LC3), L2 from LC4 / LC5 via 540-885 + 540-881, L4 from the selector-valve drain LC6 via 585-616 + 585-611, joined with T-adapter 585-613.
