Selden Hydraulic Backstay Tensioner with Integrated Pump — Owner's Manual

Technical Data

A lever-driven pump inside the tensioner pressurizes the cylinder and pulls the rod in. Sized for tensioning and operating a 10 mm wire backstay; two-speed with adjustable switch-over, adjustable maximum force, and a pressure gauge.

Installation

  • Install and operate at a maximum of 45 degrees from vertical; beyond that air can get into the valves (see troubleshooting).
  • To extend the rod during installation, attach a halyard to the rod end and open the pressure release screw.

Operation

  • More tension: close the pressure release screw gently clockwise to its end position (too hard can damage internal parts), then pump the lever.
  • Less tension: open the release screw anti-clockwise; oil escapes from the pressurized side of the piston.
  • Pumping starts at high speed and switches automatically to low speed as load rises.

Setting Max Pump Pressure (345 bar at delivery)

  1. Lower the pressure by opening the release valve.
  2. Turn the pump pressure adjustment valve gently clockwise with a 4mm hex key until it seats against its stop.
  3. From there, turn it three revolutions anti-clockwise.
  4. Pump while watching the gauge.
  5. When pressure stops rising despite pumping, the valve has reached its set level and is passing oil.
  6. Adjust until you reach the pressure you want – further clockwise = higher setting.

High / Low Speed Switch Pressure

  • Raise the switch-over pressure: 4 mm hex key, turn the speed-switch valve gently clockwise; never force it against its end position.
  • Lower it: turn anti-clockwise, never more than 3 revolutions from the innermost position (leakage).

Maintenance & Storage

  • Rinse with fresh water regularly; rinse off all detergent (most corrode aluminium). Silicone-free wax protects the surfaces.
  • Grease the linkage underneath the tensioner annually with Selden grease 312-501 or an equivalent high-quality marine grease.
  • Service at intervals of no more than five years in normal use; more often for charter or circumnavigation.
  • Storage: keep stainless parts (wire halyards, standing rigging) off the aluminium to avoid galvanic corrosion; store dry with air circulating – never wrapped in plastic.

Troubleshooting

Problem Cause / action
Tension not increasing as the lever is pumped / irregular pumping Air in the valves. Bleed: (1) vertical – close release valve, pump until the rod is fully in; (2) vertical – open release valve, pump approximately 10 times slowly; (3) horizontal – pull the rod out; (4) vertical – close, pump until fully in; (5) vertical – open, pump approximately 10 times slowly.
Tension decreases quickly Leak from the pressurized side of the piston (piston seals, rod seals or valves). Check the release screw is closed, bleed trapped air, try the tensioner at its end positions. If it persists, contact Selden.
Does not reach its fully contracted position Wrong amount of oil – check the oil level (below).

Checking the oil level

  1. Open the release valve and pull the rod out.
  2. Turn the tensioner rod-down.
  3. Carefully unscrew the tank fill plug, moving it slightly as it loosens to let trapped air escape. Pull the pump lever out slightly to reach the plug with the Allen key – no further than necessary, or pressure builds under the plug. Keep the plug clean and keep dirt out.
  4. Lay the tensioner horizontal, fill opening up.
  5. The correct level is slightly above the bottom of the drilled oil channel under the fill plug.
  6. To add oil, raise the lower end slightly; to remove oil, tilt the horizontal tensioner sideways and let some run out of the fill hole. Re-check.
  7. Refit the tank fill plug.
  8. Bleed trapped air from the valves.
