Selden Hydraulic Boom Vang — Owner's Manual

How the Hydraulic Vang Works

A single-acting cylinder worked by hydraulic pressure and pressurised gas. Raise the oil pressure and the vang contracts, pulling the boom down; release it and the nitrogen gas acts as a spring, extending the vang and pushing the boom up. It replaces the topping lift when sailing, holds the boom up when the main is lowered, and needs no control lines in the cockpit.

The fourth column is headed HV 89 in the manual, but its 138 kN max load matches the HV 138 seal kit (as printed). Fitting dimensions (A–K) are on the drawing in the PDF.

Optional: restrictor valve 1/4" ø1,2, item no. 587-830 (recommended with the vang).

Before You Start

  • Installation by a competent installer with marine hydraulics experience.
  • Use only hydraulic hoses and connectors suited to the marine environment and to 345 bar working pressure; keep impurities out of the system.
  • The vang joins an existing hydraulic system (hoses, pump station and tank: Seldén manual 597-145). Have the hose with the right fitting ready near the mast kicker bracket.
  • Before fitting, pressurise the vang and run the piston rod in and out a few times to bleed air and lubricate the seals.
  • Split pins on the clevis pins: see Seldén manual 595-540.

Step by Step

  1. Cover the working area under the boom with protective sheets.
  2. Remove the transport cover from the vang.
  3. Support the outer end of the boom with a topping lift, halyard or other support.
  4. Mount the vang fork on the mast kicker bracket with clevis and split pin.
  5. Connect the hydraulic hose to one of the two ports in the fork; the unused port stays closed with the factory plug (integrated seal).
  6. Adjust the boom support until the end-cap hole lines up with the boom kicker bracket; fit clevis and split pin. Alternatively pressurise the vang very carefully until the holes match – keep fingers clear.
  7. Run the vang through its full stroke 5 times to bleed air. Check the boom does not hit the spray hood or coach roof when fully compressed. Standard: boom lifts ~10° and lowers ~5°.

Troubleshooting

Problem Probable cause Action
Not enough return force (push with no oil pressure) Gas pressure reduced by leakage Have the vang serviced and refilled with nitrogen gas
Not enough tension in the vang (tension is proportional to oil pressure) Air in the hydraulic system or leakage past the piston seals Check the hydraulic system for trapped air

Hydraulic pressure is dangerous: only trained personnel with marine hydraulic experience should work on the system.

Operation: motoring in a seaway with the main lowered or furled, also use a topping lift at the boom end with the mainsheet tight to stabilise the boom.

Maintenance

  • Rinse with fresh water regularly; rinse off all detergent (most contain elements that corrode aluminium). Silicone-free wax protects the surfaces.
  • Grease the clevis pins at the end cap and fork regularly (Omega 95 recommended) – a small amount on the contact surfaces.
  • Have the vang serviced at least every five years in normal use; more often for charter or circumnavigation.
  • Inspect the hydraulic hoses at every service and replace if worn. If contaminants are found, change the oil of the whole hydraulic system.
  • Storage: keep stainless parts (halyard wires, standing rigging) off the aluminium to avoid galvanic corrosion; store dry with air circulating, never wrapped in plastic.

Releasing the Nitrogen Gas

Danger of death – asphyxiating atmosphere. Release only in a well-ventilated area or outside, never in a confined space. Wear hand, eye and ear protection.

  1. Remove the plug in the cylinder end with a 6 mm hex key (it may be pressurised).
  2. Push the ball down with a small screwdriver or 2 mm hex key without damaging the o-ring seal.
  3. All the gas takes about one minute to come out.

Removing the vang: lift the boom end until the boom-bracket clevis pin is unloaded, remove the pin, release the hydraulic pressure and let the vang extend fully, disconnect and plug the hose and the port, then remove the mast-bracket pin.

Workshop: Seal Change & Piston Rod (597-870-E / 597-866-E)

The assembly/disassembly instruction covers HV 44, HV 57, HV 89, HV 46, HV 69, HV 106 and HV 138, with a seal drawing for each size.

  • Tools: 2 mm hex wrench or small screwdriver (gas release), hex wrenches, face pin wrench for 6 mm holes (9 mm for HV 138), picking tools for o-rings, Loctite 243 and Loctite 2400.
  • Release the gas first, clamp the cylinder in a padded vise, remove the fork (right-hand thread; on HV 46, 69, 89, 106, 138 undo the fork grub screw first), then unscrew the cylinder head cap with the face pin wrench and pull out the rod.
  • Piston seals: HV 44, 46, 57, 69, 89 use an NBR piston seal fitted from the rod side and a u-cup gas seal with the lip against the gas; HV 106 and 138 use piston seals over o-rings (warm the seals in hot water to fit).
  • Bond the piston to the rod and the head cap, extension tube and end cap threads with Loctite 2400; grub screws with Loctite 243, max 7 Nm.
  • Align the fork before filling: turn fork/rod clockwise until the forks are in line and both fork plugs face the same way.
  • Refill with nitrogen through a BSP 1/4" ISO 228-1 adapter to 43 bar. Check: with 43 bar gas, about 50 bar oil pressure starts to move the piston in.
