Swaging Hydraulic Hoses
- Cut the hose to length, straight.
- Push the hose into the ferrule by hand until it reaches the bottom.
- Push the nipple of the hose fitting into the hose (by hand or with an assembly unit) until its flange stops against the ferrule – the fitting pushes the hose a few millimetres out of the ferrule. Check the fitting sits correctly in the ferrule; grease may be used if the fit is tight.
- Crimp the ferrule in a hose press to the diameter below and check it with a caliper.

Note the two different 1/4" hoses. Check very thoroughly that no impurities get into the system. Selden publishes this as a recommendation only – always check the settings and swage diameters for the machine you use.

Old and new hoses have the same diameter after swaging.
Maker's data for the hoses Selden uses (from the appendix)
| Hose code | ID (inch / mm) | OD (mm) | Working pressure (bar, 1:4 safety) | Min bend radius (mm) | Weight (g/m) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| OL737000 (OL7 Marine) | 1/4" / 6.4 | 11.8 | 200 | 35 | 90 |
| OL757000 (OL7 Marine) | 3/8" / 9.7 | 16.0 | 175 | 55 | 155 |
| OL767000 (OL7 Marine) | 1/2" / 13.0 | 20.3 | 140 | 75 | 219 |
| OL837000 (OL8 Marine) | 1/4" / 6.4 | 11.8 | 350 | 50 | 97 |
OL7 Marine: SAE J517-100R7 / ISO 3949, −54°C to +100°C. OL8 Marine: SAE 100R8 / ISO 3949, −40°C to +100°C. Both: max +70°C for air, water and water-based fluids; vacuum rating 0.93 bar.
Definition of Hose Length
Couplings are pressed onto the hose and cannot be removed. Couplings B, C and D have swivel nuts: measure from the centre of the cone. Coupling types: A = male 0°, B = nut 0°, C = nut 45°, D = nut 90°, E = banjo. The drawing in the second PDF shows where each length is measured.
