Before You Start

Discontinued model – documents and spare parts as printed.

Instruction 595-052-E (1988) for exchanging the halyard swivel on a Selden in-mast furling mast. The mast must be unstepped.

  • Adjustable spanners 10–17 mm.
  • Winch handle.
  • For masts manufactured before May 1988: drill with Ø 5 mm bit.

Dismantling

  1. Lay the mast horizontally on trestles.
  2. Slacken the luff extrusion tension (see the furling mast manual).
  3. Remove the four nuts on top of the masthead box.
  4. Unwind the tensioning screw completely; leave the tensioning screw/toggle assembly connected to the gear.
  5. Detach the top swivel from the masthead box and pull the luff extrusion out of the mast.
  6. Exchange the halyard swivel.

Reassembly

  1. Put the luff extrusion back into the mast and refit the top swivel to the masthead box.
  2. Refit the masthead box, feeding the hook bolts into their holes. Make sure no halyards, cables or messenger lines are trapped between head box and mast.
  3. Reassemble the tensioning screw at the gear bracket (do not forget the locking tube). Alternately tension the screw and push the head box into position.
  4. Adjust the head box until its chiselled markings line up with the lines on the mast extrusion; refit and tighten the nuts.
  5. Adjust the luff extrusion tension.
