Selden Joined Masts Reassembly — Instructions

Reassembly of Spliced Masts (595-603-SE)

  1. Mast front up; check the halves are not turned and halyards not twisted. Clean the joint surfaces, tension halyards and cables, push together and support the mast straight at the joint.
  2. Screws not enclosed: rivet from the front, then aft, one side at a time. Sections with permanent screws: fit them first from the front, with locking adhesive, then rivet.
  3. Screws enclosed (threaded butt-strap holes): pull mast and butt strap together with the screws along the front line, rivet the adjoining holes, remove the screws, drill the holes ø 6,5mm and rivet; work aft one side at a time.
  4. Remove the rivet mandrels, check the sail groove (file the joint if needed so slides pass), refit the spinnaker pole track – fit all its rivets loosely first to check it is not upside down.
  5. Handle the splice with care; lift the mast with its front or aft side up.

321/171, 365/194, 324/169, 370/192 (595-735-E)

Screwdriver TORX # 40, tightening moment 19-21 Nm; locking adhesive (Loctite 639 or equivalent).

  1. Mast parts on cradles, front up; tie corresponding messenger lines together (tape the knots for long service).
  2. Fit the joint sleeves loosely to one half: four screws per sleeve, hand-tight.
  3. Push the halves together keeping messengers and cables tight; align the holes.
  4. Fit all screws with locking adhesive; tighten the four per sleeve, then the rest from the front line aft, one side at a time, completing each longitudinal row.

Older version (595-631-E)

  • Sections 214x122, 232x126, 260x136: front rivet lines LK850 (countersunk), remaining forward butt strap LD850 (dome headed); aft butt straps MFX 6x10 (214x122, 232x126) or MFX 6x12 (260x136).
  • Section 290x150: all screws – front lines MFX 6x16, remaining MFX 6x12; no riveting.
  • Tools: phillips screwdriver, half round file, hammer, 2.5 mm mandrel, sailmaker's needle (plus rivet gun, drill and 6.5 mm bit for riveted sections).

Luff Extrusion (in-mast furling masts only)

  1. Mast port side up; slacken the messengers at the headbox approx. 200mm.
  2. Remove the four nuts on top of the masthead box; leave the box hanging in the messengers without twisting them.
  3. Take the top luff extrusion out of the sail compartment; pull out the lower one (tack hook end) until the joining sleeve just protrudes. Do not remove the halyard swivel.
  4. Push the two parts together with the sail grooves perfectly aligned; fit and pull the supplied rivets, remove mandrels, fit plastic plugs if supplied.
  5. Push the plastic cover of the top extrusion down to meet the lower one; push the assembly in until the end just protrudes and fit the top swivel.
  6. Refit the head box with the four L-bolts + nuts, marks on the headbox matching the mast lines.
  7. Fit the lower end to the furling gear shaft, split pin on the side opposite the tack hook, and tension the luff extrusion per the furling mast manual.
  8. Halyards: fit one at a time with a sailmaker's needle, untying only one messenger at a time.
