Mounting the Winch

  1. Mark the centre with the template and cut the large hole; fit the motor pack in it.
  2. Remove top cover (winch tool), self-tailing arm, locator bracket and drum, leaving the roller bearings on the base.
  3. Seat the winch base on the motor pack, located on the gear shaft and small locating pin; orient it for the load and lift it off without moving the motor pack.
  4. Mark and drill the fastening holes, countersink the tops, tap if threading; check the fit.
  5. Feed the cables through; put the included contact grease inside the connector and on the motor-pack pins; fit connector seal and connector with its two screws.
  6. Seal fasteners and the motor-pack contact face with a non-hardening compound (e.g. Butyl) – no glue; fit and tighten.
  7. Bolt the winch base to the motor pack, refit drum, bracket and arm, tighten the top cover. Connect the three cables to the terminals shown on the MCU – the correct MCU for that winch.

Electric

Buttons Action
"IN" Winch in, low speed
Hold "IN" + press "OUT" Winch in, high speed
"OUT" Reverse out, low speed
Hold "OUT" + press "IN" Reverse out, high speed

Line over the arm, through the jaws and into the "hook" on the arm; make sure it sits properly in the self-tailer before reversing.

Manual

  • A locking winch handle is required; the winch will not reverse with a handle fitted.
  • Turn slowly to engage the manual gearing and check the handle has locked – otherwise the spring-loaded plunger ejects it.
  • Anticlockwise = high speed, clockwise = low speed. Remove the handle to return to electric mode; under load, run the winch IN briefly before it can reverse.

Trouble Shooting

Problem Cause Action
Loss of self-tailing Line not seated; too few turns; wrong line size Re-seat the line; add turns; correct line size
Not ratcheting Ratchet gears reassembled wrongly; maintenance due Flip the ratchet gears to match pawl engagement; service
Not reversing Winch handle installed; drive shaft gear engaged (plunger at the bottom of the socket) Remove the handle; run the winch IN briefly; service
No response to push-buttons Power off; faulty electric installation Switch on; check cables, button configuration and SEL-Bus fault codes

Yearly Winch Service

  • Strip as for the S-winch: top cover, arm, locator bracket, drum, roller bearing(s), drum washer, drive shaft (friction lock), gear shafts and gears.
  • Clean in white spirits; pawl oil on the pawls (not grease); grease inside the small ratchet gear and the raised surface inside the large one.
  • Clean the drive shaft and put pawl oil on its sliding surfaces; grease all gears and the drum gear. Do not grease the roller bearing(s).

Yearly Motor Pack Service

  • Remove retaining ring, washer, gear, pawls and springs, then the top plate.
  • Remove the ratchet hub (and washer on the E40rev); no degreaser on parts still attached to the base plate.
  • Grease shaft, gears, output shaft and the top-plate seal; pawl oil on the pawls; replace a deformed locking ring.
  • Extended motor-pack maintenance every five years by a technician: manual 597-981.
