Included: drilling template (S30 597-198-E, S40 597-509-E, S46/S52 597-511-E, S60/S66 597-512-E), manual and winch tool 473-010. Exceeding the max line size can damage the self-tailing jaws.

Selden Series-S winch main components: top cover, self-tailing arm, drum, locator bracket, roller bearings and winch base

Fasteners (not supplied)

Winch Fastener Marking drill Through deck M-thread drill
S30 Countersunk M6 Ø 6,5 mm Ø 7 mm Ø 5,0 mm
S40 Countersunk M8 Ø 8,5 mm Ø 9 mm Ø 6,8 mm
S46, S52 Countersunk M8 Ø 8,5 mm Ø 9 mm Ø 6,8 mm
S60, S66 Countersunk M10 Ø 10,5 mm Ø 11 mm Ø 8,5 mm

Marking drill: use a smaller drill when marking through the template. Line entry 5-10°; orient the drive gear to the load side (highest load if multi-use).

Mounting

  1. Remove top cover (winch tool), self-tailing arm, locator bracket and drum; the roller bearings stay on the base.
  2. Mark the holes with the template or base (base recommended when threading into the deck).
  3. Drill, countersink the tops, tap if threading; check the fit.
  4. Seal with a non-hardening compound (e.g. Butyl), no glue; when through-bolting, hold the screw and turn the nut.
  5. Refit drum, bracket and arm with the line stripper captive under the arm; set the arm to lead the line to the cockpit and tighten the top cover.

Operation

  • 2-3 turns, pull the slack, more turns if needed, then over the arm into the jaws.
  • Handle anti-clockwise = high gear; clockwise = low gear. More turns while pulling slack increases the risk of override.

Trouble Shooting

Problem Action
Loss of self-tailing Re-seat the line; add turns; use the correct line size
Not ratcheting Flip the ratchet gears to match pawl engagement; service the winch

Yearly Maintenance

  1. Remove top cover, arm (note its position), locator bracket and drum.
  2. Remove roller bearings, drum washer and drive shaft (O-ring friction lock – use a winch handle if needed); lift the two gear shafts out with a small screwdriver.
  3. Remove the two gear assemblies, minding the washers; clean in white spirits and replace worn pawls and springs.
  4. Pawl oil on the pawls; thin grease on gear teeth, small hubs, shafts, the drum's internal gear and the drive-shaft gear.
  5. Do not grease the roller bearings. Reassemble with the line stripper captive under the arm.

At least once a year; more often for racing and charter boats. Rinse occasionally with fresh water.
