Selden Splice Instructions — Service Manual

100% HMPE Eye Splice (595-423-E)

Only for 100% HMPE, and only if the long end is free to pass through the short end at point B. No stitching needed; the eye can be made around a thimble, through a fitting, or both.

Marking

Line Ø (mm) 70 x Ø (mm)
5 350
6 420
8 560
10 700
12 864
14 1008

Mark A 100 mm from B on the long end; B sits 70 x Ø from the short end. Values for 12 and 14 mm as printed.

Method

  1. Feed the line through the fitting if required; mark A and B.
  2. Feed the short end through the long end at A (B must pass through at A).
  3. Feed the long part through the short end at B.
  4. Pull the loops together; check the lock by holding the long end and pulling both parts of the loop.
  5. Mark C and feed the short end internally through the middle of the long part to exit at C.
  6. Taper the short end (30 min tail as drawn), tension the loop and smooth the outer part to bury the tapered end.

HMPE Eye Splice on Lines with Cover (595-248-E)

  • For HMPE lines (Dyneema, Spectra etc.) with a braided core; a stiffer core makes a stronger splice.
  • Two tucks lock mechanically and one by friction; use the splice only as shown (around a shackle).
  • Pull the cover back approximately 3000 mm and lock it with a knot; mark A and B (800 mm + 2X, 300 mm, 2X; X = length of eye).
  • After the tucks, pull the cover back over, tape approximately 10 mm wide, cut excess cover, whip approximately 15 mm wide over the tape and dip in wax.

Eye Splice 32/3 Rope, 8-16 mm (595-296-E)

Core Taper (LIROS rope)

Rope Taper of core Yarns / parts
Ø 8 50% 4 x 3
Ø 10 50% 5 x 3
Ø 12 50% 8 x 3
Ø 14 60% 9 x 3

Example Ø 10: cut 2 yarns in the first part, 3 in the second and 2 in the third.

Key Steps

  1. Knot or clamp the rope 3000 mm from the end; push the cover back 200-300 mm, then the slack about 1000 mm.
  2. Measure 400 mm from the cover end and fold: A for the eye, B for the standing part. Pull out the core at B; tape the core at C, opposite A.
  3. Split the core in three, taper per the table, tape about 50 mm over the cut yarns.
  4. Insert the needle 400 mm from B, exit at A, pull the core through leaving 10-20 mm visible.
  5. Remove 5 strands in a line on the cover 50 mm from A; insert the needle 350 mm from B, exit at A, pull the cover through.
  6. Pull tight, snatch hard, bed the yarns with a hammer; fit a thimble before pulling tight if required; cut and smooth.

Older Editions and Other Sheets

  • Splice for 32/3 rope (595-755-E, 2003): same principle – knot 3000mm from the end, mark A and B at 400mm, taper core by 50%, needle in at 400mm from B, tapered cover pulled through from 200mm from B.
  • HMPE eye splice, 2003 edition (595-821-E).
  • Marlow Spectra eye splice (595-756-E): illustrated 10-step sheet.
  • Running knot (595-760): drawing only.
