Every five years, by a knowledgeable technician (dealer category Advanced technical installations). Includes the yearly motor pack service from manual 597-490, section 6.2.

Maintenance Procedure

  1. Remove the motor pack from the boat (597-490, section 6.3).
  2. Remove locking ring, washer and gear, then pawls and springs; remove the top-plate fastener and ease the top plate off.
  3. Remove the ratchet hub (and shaft on E46-E66 – not on the E40); clean and degrease all parts.
  4. Pull the centre gear with a bearing puller; remove the bottom plate and the output shaft; empty the gearbox oil. Clean loose parts – not inside the gearbox.
  5. Replace the pawls and springs in the output shaft and the seals and O-ring in the top and bottom plates.
  6. Fill the gearbox with 30ml of oil from the top; refit the output shaft, depressing the inner pawls with two small pins (diameter 1-1.5mm).
  7. Grease the bottom-plate seal and plain bearing and the output shaft; refit the bottom plate with medium strength thread locker.
  8. Fit the key and press the centre gear on; grease shaft and pawl hub; grease the gears generously and the top-plate bushing and seal; refit the top plate.
  9. Grease inside the gear, pawl oil in the pawl pockets; fit pawls, springs, gear, washer and lock ring, replacing worn parts.
  10. Remount the motor pack and the winch (service the winch per 597-490, section 6.1 first).
