Spinlock BRS Jammer Block — Instructions

Fitting the Strop

  • Fit the block so it can articulate fully, on a pad eye or a toe rail.
  • Attach the strop by looping it through itself round a strong point, over a smooth, large-radius surface to minimise wear.
  • Both strop ends secured on the pin, with the fastener secured. Avoid a lark's foot (the "Bad" drawing shows the strop twisted on itself).
  • Pull the elastic cord through to a knot on the required side with pliers; it supports the block when not in use.
  • Do not replace the strop with a shackle unless it supports the full length of the pin (e.g. a wide, flat shackle).

3-Phase Cam Action

  • Lock-back: holds the cam open, clear of the line.
  • Auto-release: when the sheet is loaded on the winch or by hand, the cam springs clear of the rope automatically.
  • Friction phase: the cam stays on the rope even if load is taken off; it cannot be released under load – release the rope by re-tensioning only.
  • Lock the cam back clear of the rope after use. Take care not to overload the block with single sheets on a reach.
  • Note the maximum cam loads: this cam must not be used on a spinnaker guy.

Cam Tuning (Allen Key Supplied)

  1. Unscrew the grub screw anticlockwise to the zero-friction position.
  2. Pass rope of the correct size through the block and press the cam onto it with light pressure. Tighten the grub screw just enough to hold the cam in position.
  3. Check the release with a sharp tug on the rope, on the cam side of the block.
  4. Adjust as necessary: clockwise increases friction (locking), anticlockwise reduces friction (release).

Maintenance

  • Avoid prolonged sunlight when not in use; beware of sharp edges, abrasive surfaces and chemicals.
  • Flush regularly with fresh water; when dry, apply silicone spray or Spinlock grease to the alloy components.
  • Do not use mineral oil or solvent-based lubricants such as "WD40": they degrade the composite bearings.
  • Check it is correctly specified and installed before use; never use it if damaged.
