Spinlock EA & EJ Tiller Extension — Instructions

Lengths and Dimensions

Model (asymmetric) Length closed Length extended
EA/900S 600mm 900mm
EA/1200S 750mm 1200mm
EA/1600S 950mm 1600mm
EA/2000S 1350mm 2000mm
  • EA handle 144mm wide × 82mm; on the tiller the joint assembly is shown on a 47mm tiller with a Ø17 and Ø5 fixing (dimension drawings, scale 1:10 on A4 – for reference, not templates).
  • EAC/1600: ultra-lightweight carbon fibre and titanium extendable extension with the titanium E-JOINT GP (also available with Diabolo joint); length adjustable from ~1000–1600MM in 50MM increments; weight 405g; E-JOINT GP M5 × 2 on 30 fixing centres.
  • E-DIABOLO: 135g, 1 × M8 stud, maximum tiller thickness 48MM; E-DIABOLO/J (jumbo): 145g. Use threadlock on the M8 stud at installation, with the M8 lock-nut.
  • E-JOINT: 2 × M5 CSK, 30.0 fixing centres, 38 (25 with standard fixings) below the base. The new pins are a push fit that needs no reaming.

Fitting the Grey Pivot Bearing

Wooden Tiller (Fig. A)

  • Drill a through hole Ø12.5mm (1/2").
  • Varnish the hole.
  • Insert the grey socket.
  • Secure with the 2 × No.8 screws (supplied).

The figure shows Ø12.6 on 30.0 centres, with pilot holes for countersunk self-tapping or wood screws; the plastic moulding must be a close fit in the tiller.

Metal or Composite Tiller (Fig. B)

  • Drill a through hole Ø12.5mm (1/2").
  • From the underside drill Ø16.5mm (21/32"). Do not drill through the top skin/top wall.
  • Insert the grey backing spacer tube (E-SLEEVE), which supports the pivot bearing. On composite tillers seal the hole with gelcoat to keep water out of the fibres.
  • The top external surface around the tube must be flush with the tiller.
  • Insert the grey pivot bearing and fix it with 2 × countersunk M5 bolts and M5 Nyloc nuts (supplied).

The figure shows Ø16.8 on 30.0 centres, 5.2 holes for the M5 fasteners, and tiller thickness minimum 25 / maximum 38 with the supplied fasteners. Fig. C shows the Diabolo fitting on a Ø11.3 hole.

Swivel / Diabolo Joint

  • Remove the old joint: tap out the two stainless retaining pins with a hammer and tap, then pull tube and swivel end apart.
  • Fit: remove packaging, insert the plastic swivel end into the tube so the stainless pins will locate through tube and moulding; insert the stainless fork (E-JOINT) or stainless collar (E-DIABOLO); insert both pins so all parts are captive.
  • Never force or strike the E-JOINT or E-DIABOLO onto the tube.
  • The E-DIABOLO attaches either with the universal joint, washer and nyloc nut, or – when more fastener length is needed – with the stainless sleeve, washer and special threaded fastener (the stud can be cut down).

Handle Button Replacement

  1. Insert two small flat screwdrivers, one either side of the button and its securing tabs, so the handle seam opens slightly.
  2. Push down lightly while moving the screwdrivers outwards until the tabs pass and the button pops out (easiest with the extension closed).
  3. Fit the small locking insert on the new button the right way round (it has a small draft angle).
  4. Place the new button with the insert over the extension rod.
  5. Push down firmly so the locking tabs locate inside the handle.
  6. Push the button fully down to drive the locking insert up and lock the tabs.

Maintenance

  • Flush the tiller extension regularly with FRESH WATER to remove salt.
  • Do NOT lubricate the locking mechanism: mineral oil and solvent-based lubricants such as "WD40" age the plastic parts and draw debris into the ball lock.
  • Never sail with a damaged or bent tiller extension.
