Mast Pro at a Glance

Item Value
Type Mast harness – a secure alternative to a bosun's chair
Standard EN 12277 type C (tested to the relevant requirements, in the absence of a specific standard for sit harnesses used on sailboats)
Use temperature -40° C to +80° C
Lifetime Shelf life up to 5 years before first use; after first use it should last 5 years
  • Ratchet-Fit™ leg strap adjustment for a secure fit; super-wide leg straps and a structured waist belt that spreads the load.
  • Marine-grade stainless steel ‘double back’ buckles with neoprene covers to prevent snagging.
  • User-replaceable leg-strap elastics, tool attachment points, a tripping-spike pocket accessible from both sides, and it integrates with the heavy-duty soft tool pack.

Adjusting and Tying On

  • Diagram 1 shows closing/opening and tightening/loosening the buckles, shortening the waist belt to extra small and adjusting for comfort.
  • Put the harness on and test it (walking, sitting, standing and secured under tension) for a good fit and comfort.
  • A. Bowline. B. Halyard with shackle: attach the shackle back on the loop. No shackle: make a double half hitch with the tail of the halyard to secure the bowline.

Hoisting, Aloft, Lowering

  • Follow the orders of the climber.
  • Hoisting: keep the clutch closed during the hoist and while aloft; always tail the halyard round a winch.
  • Aloft: always keep the halyard under tension. Clutches are made for easy release – after hoisting and whenever someone is aloft, tie off the halyard on a winch in case the clutch is released by accident.
  • Lowering: support the halyard load on the winch while opening the clutch handle, and follow the instructions of the person aloft.
  • The harness is not designed to sustain a drop fall on a static rope. Icy or wet conditions increase the risk of accidents.

Checking = Safety

  • Scrap a harness showing wear that could affect its strength or function; ideally allocate it to a single user.
  • Check buckles and other fastenings regularly during use; check webbing and stitching before and after use, including the less accessible areas.
  • Every three months carry out a complete inspection (record sheet provided): fabric for cuts, tears, abrasion, heat or chemical damage; stitching for cut, torn, worn or loose threads; buckles for proper function.
  • Non-slip deck surfaces quickly abrade leg straps; they are protected with heavy-duty fabric. If the underlying structure of the leg straps shows through, replace the harness immediately.
  • Major falls: if full bodyweight has been dropped a distance and stopped, stop using the harness – internal damage may have reduced its strength.
  • Any modification or repair except by Spinlock's production facility is forbidden. Plan for rescue in case of difficulty aloft.

Cleaning & Storage

  • Hand wash and rinse in clean water, maximum 30° C; dry in a cool, ventilated, dark room.
  • Grease spots can be removed with trichlorethylene; webbing shrinks very slightly as it dries.
  • Carry and store it in its bag, in a clean dry place away from sunlight and extreme temperatures.
  • Disinfect when necessary with a disinfectant compatible with polyamide, polyester, polycarbonate and PVC, diluted in clean water at max 20 °C (as printed); soak for an hour, rinse in clean cold water, dry slowly away from direct heat.

Chemicals & Warranty

  • Treat all chemicals (including petrol and battery acid), corrosives and solvents as harmful; after accidental contact, notify Spinlock stating the chemical.
  • Salt, sand, moisture and chemicals considerably accelerate wear.
  • Spinlock 2-year warranty against faults in materials or manufacture; excludes normal wear and tear, modifications, incorrect storage, accident, negligence and uses it was not designed for.
