How It Works and Technical Data

  • Fitted in the bilge pump discharge line, the filter element (a mass of surface-treated fibres) absorbs and retains up to 95% of oils, fats and emulsions, and isolates heavy metals; it can be washed and reused after the oil is collected.
  • Heavily contaminated water holds 100 to 200 mg/l (100 to 200 ppm); the element handles up to 600 mg/l and absorbs approximately 600 g of oil – at an average 40mg/l that is about 15.000 liters of water.
  • Use a bilge pump of approximately 20l/min; two separators in parallel increase capacity. The separator adds resistance in the discharge line.

Mounting

  • Mount on a vertical bulkhead in an easily visible place, always above the waterline and high enough to stop bilge water running back or siphoning (installation examples show min. 30 cm (12")); allow for heel on a sailboat.
  • Use flexible 19 mm hose on both sides (pump to separator, separator to through-hull); fit with water or soap only, never oily products; stainless steel hose clamps.
  • With very long hose runs, fit a check valve just downstream of the bilge pump to stop it cycling on and off.

Changing the Filter

  1. Check the element regularly and replace it before it is saturated with oil.
  2. Unscrew the cap by turning the housing anticlockwise – by hand only, never with tools.
  3. Take out the 15 loose discs one by one, clean the housing and insert the new discs one by one.
  4. Grease the O-ring (silicone oil or PTFE spray), refit the cap by hand and check the seal: a badly closed cover lets bilge water escape past the O-ring.
  5. Before frost, drain the separator by removing the hose couplings (there is no drain valve).
