41,1 - 51,4 m (134.8 - 168.6 ft) 2 x 150 mm2 (2 x AWG 300 MCM)
  • Voltage drop over the main cables must not exceed 10% of the supply voltage; the cross-section depends on the total length of plus and minus cable.
  • Main switch in the positive cable (BATSW250, or the remote BPMAIN12 / BPMAIN24 main switch with emergency stop); main fuse in the positive cable as close to the battery as possible; fuse holder ZEHC100.
  • Give the thruster its own battery bank close to it. Only sealed batteries (Vetus SMF or AGM) in the thruster compartment: sparks from the carbon brushes can ignite charging gas.
  • A battery of five times or more the suggested capacity can permanently damage the shaft connections; much larger batteries with very short, heavy cables raise the thrust, so shorten the running time.
  • Vetus maintenance-free batteries: 55 Ah, 70 Ah, 90 Ah, 108 Ah, 120 Ah, 143 Ah, 165 Ah, 200 Ah and 225 Ah.

Tunnel Position and Hull Connection

Item Value (tunnel D = 110 mm (4 5/16"))
Distance A (min. 0.5 x D) 55 mm (2 1/4")
Tunnel length B (2 x D to 4 x D) 220...440 mm (9...18")
Rounded edge R (about 0.1 x D) 11 mm (7/16")
Sloping side C (0.1 to 0.15 x D) 11 ... 17 mm (7/16 ...11/16")
Fairing length L (1 x D to 3 x D) 110 ... 330 mm (4 1/2 ...13")
Hull hole for the tunnel (steel / GRP / aluminium) 121 (4 49/64") / 120 (4 13/32") / 120 mm (4 13/32")
  • Place the tunnel as far forward as possible; the propeller preferably on the centreline but always reachable from outside. Never let the tailpiece protrude from the tunnel end.
  • Motor in various positions: support it if horizontal or angled, and keep it well clear of the maximum bilge water level.
  • Do not fit 2 bow thrusters in one tunnel: it does not double the thrust. Tandem thrusters suit larger boats; on a planing boat keep the tunnel above the waterline when planing if possible.
  • Grid bars only when strictly necessary: rectangular section, never round, perpendicular to the expected waveform, overlapping, no more than shown.
  • No copper-based antifouling; the zinc anode is a must. On steel or aluminium tunnels insulate the bolts and shaft (e.g. nylon bushes); the gaskets are already insulating.
  • GRP tunnel: roughen down to the glass fibre, laminate with isophtalic polyester resin (Norpol Pl 2857), seal sawn ends with resin; wet side in epoxy or 2-component polyurethane paint, then antifouling.

The drill pattern for the intermediate flange is printed at scale 1:1 in the PDF: print at 100%, check the dimensions and centre it exactly on the tunnel centreline.

Mechanical

  • Delivered assembled: remove the propeller, the motor and the intermediate flange; the 2 transport bushes are no longer needed.
  • Shim plate on the tailpiece, one packing between tailpiece and tunnel, sealant (polyurethane e.g. Sikaflex-292, or silicone) on both faces.
  • Grease the flange hole and the bolt threads with outboard gear grease (Vetus Shipping Grease VSG); flange bolts M6 4 - 5 Nm (3 - 3.7 ft.lbf).
  • Propeller on a greased shaft, at least 1.5 mm (1/16") clear of the tunnel wall all round.
  • Align the coupling with the spindle end and flange underside, tighten the lock screw (M5, 3 Nm), grease the input shaft with Molykote G-n plus and fit the motor. Turn the propeller by hand: it must turn easily.
  • Check for leaks as soon as the boat is back in the water.

Electrical

  • Check that the motor type plate voltage matches the boat's supply.
  • Main cable terminals: hold nut 1 with an open-ended spanner while tightening nut 2 to 8 - 10 Nm (6 - 7 ft.lbf).
  • Control panel next to the helm with at least 50 mm (2") free behind it; suitable panels: BPJE2, BPSE2, BPJDE2, EZDOCK2, BPAJ, BPAS, BPJR, BPSR. A second helm panel connects to the first.
  • If the intermediate cable is cut, reconnect colour to colour (its core colours may differ from those on motor and panel). Wiring colour code: 1 blue, 2 red (+), 3 black (-), 4 white.
  • Reversing delay with a BPJSTA joystick, BPSM side panel or FSxx foot switch: add the BPTD delay unit. With two foot switches add 2 extra relays so K1 and K2 can never be engaged together.
  • Test run: if the thrust direction is opposite to the switch, interchange the blue (no. 1) and white (no. 4) wires on the relay. Check all connections after 14 days.

Use and Troubleshooting

  • Watch for swimmers and small boats near the tunnel openings. Never run the thruster without load; stop it at once if it gives no thrust.
  • Never switch from starboard to port (or back) in one movement: wait until the propeller stops. With 2 panels, never operate from both at once.
  • Running time is limited by motor heating: 4 min. continuously or max. 4 min. per hour (12 Volt). Let the motor cool after use.
  • Switch off the main switch when leaving the ship. The carbon brushes release fine black dust: keep fragile equipment away.
Symptom Check
Motor does not run Main switch ON; control panel fuse [1] and main fuse; POWER LED is off in these cases. Motor overheated: thermal protection cuts the control current, the panel sounds ( . - . . - ) three times and the LED is red until it cools (if it stays red, contact your dealer). Check the propeller turns freely.
Motor turns slowly Flat battery; corroded connections; carbon brushes not contacting; low temperature; weed or fishing line in the propeller.
Panel fuse blown Short circuit in the operating circuit; check the wiring.
Motor runs (too) fast, no thrust Damaged propeller blades, or broken drive pin: replace it and check the propeller flange.
Panel does not switch on Press on/off a second time within 6 seconds.

[1] The control current fuse is in the motor; a spare 5 A fuse is in the relay cap.
