Vetus Louvred Air Suction Vents (for Engines) ASV, SSV, SSVL, ASVREC — Installation Manual

Sizing the Air Intake

  • Each engine needs about 6.1 m3 (215 cu.ft.) of air per kW (4.5 m3/HP) per hour; to burn 1 kg of fuel (approx. 1.18 litres) needs 16 kg of air (approx. 12.4 m3 at 1 atmosphere).
  • Intake air speed should not exceed 3 m/sec (9.85 ft/sec); the Vetus vent openings are designed on that basis.
  • Besides combustion air, the engine needs about the same amount again of ventilation air to carry away radiated heat, and that air must be able to leave the engine room.
  • The type number gives the horse power the vent is designed for. Example from Vetus: twin 44 kW (60 HP) engines (120 HP total) can use 2 vents type 125 (1 × Port + 1 × SB) or 4 vents type 60 (2 × Port + 2 × SB).
  • Use the vent itself as a template to mark the hole in the hull.

  • Free flow area 0.66 dm2 (10.2 sq. in.).

  • Grid (A) and elbow piece (B) can be fitted in every combination of positions.
