Vetus Proportional Panel for Bow and Stern Thruster DBPPJA — Installation & User Manual

Mounting

  • Mount the panel at the helm position with 150 mm of free space behind it.
  • Principal dimensions: front 85 × 85 mm (3 3/8"), 80 mm (3 1/8") in front of the panel, 115 mm (4 1/2") behind it, body ø 76 mm (3"), panel thickness 0.5 – 22 mm (7/8").
  • Swapping plus (+) and minus (-) causes irreparable damage. Never work on the electrical system while it is energized.
  • Up to four DBPPJA control panels can be used on one system.

V-CAN Bus

  • The CAN bus power supply must always be connected to 12 Volt (≥10 V, ≤16 V).
  • Maximum CAN line length is 40 metres; use the Vetus CAN repeater (CANR) to extend it.
  • Components with one connection must join the network through a hub; components with two connections can be simply interconnected.
  • Place the 12 Volt CAN bus power supply preferably in the middle of the system; both ends of the network always need a terminating resistor.
  • Diagrams in the manual: DBPPJA with a BOWB thruster, DBPPJA with a BOWA thruster, and two DBPPJA panels with BOWA and BOWB thrusters.

Check and Configure

  • Switch on: main switch on (stand-by), press ON/OFF; LED (1) flashes blue with di-di-di, press again within 6 seconds; LED (1) stays on and the buzzer gives dah-di-dah (- . -). Panels not switched on show a heartbeat.
  • Switch off: keep pressing ON/OFF until all LEDs are off and you hear di-di-di-dah-dah (. . . - -). Automatic switch-off 30 minutes after the last joystick use (not with HOLD engaged).
  • Before use, check that the boat moves in the direction the joystick is moved – carefully and in a safe location.
Step Thrust direction (4.6) Multiple panels (4.7)
Start Switch the panel off and wait 5 seconds. Switch the panel off and wait 5 seconds; do it on EACH panel.
1 Hold ON/OFF for 10 seconds (blue flashing and di-di-di for 6 s, then di-di-di-di-dah). Push the joystick to the right and hold ON/OFF for 10 seconds.
2 Press ON/OFF twice; LEDs (1) blue, (2) red and (4) red flash and you hear di-dah-di: configuration mode. Press ON/OFF once; LED (1) flashes blue with di-dah-di: configuration mode.
3 Bow thruster: if the top-right LED (green) flashes, move the joystick to the top-left corner and back (or the reverse); signal dah (-) and the opposite top LED flashes = reversed. Move the joystick left or right to choose the group code: A = blue flashing, B = red flashing, C = blue and red flashing together, D = purple flashing. One code per panel.
4 Stern thruster: same with the bottom LEDs and the bottom corners; signal dah dah (- -). Press ON/OFF once to confirm.
5 Press ON/OFF once to confirm.

If another combination of LEDs is lit, first restore the factory settings and start the thrust-direction check again. Factory settings: with all panels off, hold ON/OFF for 30 seconds until LED (2) flashes red and LED (3) is green (dah-di-di-di-dah), release, press ON/OFF once; all LEDs go off with the signal dah (-).

Joystick

  • Use the panel at low speed or when manoeuvring; get familiar with it in a safe location.
  • Move the joystick in the direction you want the boat to go: thrust starts at about 25% and increases proportionally to maximum at the outermost position.
  • Correct the direction from the mid position by moving the joystick slightly up or down.
  • Use the rotary knob to turn the boat around its axis.

HOLD (temporary mooring)

  • Manoeuvre against the object to be moored (use fenders) and run bow and stern thrusters with enough force to hold the boat against it.
  • Without moving the joystick, press HOLD, then release the joystick.
  • Deactivate with the HOLD button, the ON/OFF button, or by moving the joystick in the opposite direction.

Buzzer Beeps (t > 10 seconds)

Beeps Meaning
1 Bow or stern thruster is limiting
4 Bow or stern thruster is overheated
5 Bow or stern thruster is overloaded
6 Bow or stern thruster supply is high
7 Bow or stern thruster supply is low
8 CAN bus supply is low
9 CAN bus supply is high
10 Joystick is broken
11 No communication with bow or stern thruster

The corner LEDs show which thruster the code belongs to (top = bow, bottom = stern); blue LED + red LED = purple. The full LED table is in the installation manual, section 4.8.

CAN Bus Troubleshooting

Fault Explanation Solution
Supply voltage and polarity Voltage outside the specified range on a node or the whole bus can lead to hardware failure or damage. Check the V-CAN supply voltage (12 VDC) and the polarity.
Grounding Differences in ground potential between nodes can cause problems; all nodes need a common ground reference. Check that all negative terminals (of every system power supply present) are connected and in good condition.
Wire lengths Long branches from the main bus line, or very long CAN bus lengths, can cause signal reflections or weakening. Check the CAN bus line length; fit the CAN repeater (CANR) if it exceeds 40 metres.
Poor termination The V-CAN system must be terminated with 120 ohm resistors at both ends; incorrect or missing termination causes communication failures. Check the termination resistors and replace if necessary.
Short circuit Between CAN_H and CAN_L, or between one of them and ground or supply voltage: faulty connectors, damaged cables or node problems. Check all V-CAN components.
Signal interruption Broken wires, disconnected connectors or faulty pins create open circuits; some or all nodes may stop communicating. Check all V-CAN components.
Physical damage Wear and tear, environment or accidents can cause intermittent or consistent hardware problems. Check all V-CAN components.
Electrical interference Strong electromagnetic interference from nearby circuits or high-current devices may disturb CAN signals. Check the whole CAN bus system for strong interference sources.
