Premium Ropes Sailboat Lines: Racing, Cruising, Dinghy and Docking Ranges by Diameter

Premium Ropes lines are named by job: Cup for racing halyards and sheets, Cruiser for cruising running rigging, Core for single braids, Trim and Race Grip for dinghies, Dock and Anchor for the mooring side. This page is the map; each range has its own collection with the diameters, colors and products. Rope and line are sold by the foot, so you pick the product for your diameter and order the number of feet you need. The pre-made fender lines, soft shackles and soft attachment loops are sold as finished pieces.

Premium Ropes Ranges and Diameters
  • Racing: S Cup (Stirotex core, polyester cover, 3 to 16 mm), DX Cup (Dyneema SK78 core, polyester cover, 6 to 14 mm) and TN Racing (Stirotex core, Technora polyester cover, 4 to 16 mm). The same collection lists the DX Cover, a Dyneema SK78 single-braid cover for 8 to 12 mm lines. See the DX Cup 10 mm.
  • Performance Cruise: DX Performance, a Dyneema SK38 core with a polyester cover in 8, 10 and 12 mm, listed for performance-cruise halyards, sheets and control lines with very low stretch. See the DX Performance 10 mm.
  • Cruising: Cruiser XTS polyester double braid, listed with low stretch for cruising halyards, sheets and control lines. It comes in Solid, Grip Solid and Grip MX versions and in Flecks (recycled polyester), with diameters from 4 to 16 mm across the range. Start with the Cruiser XTS Solid 10 mm.
  • Classic: S Cup Classic, the S Cup build (Stirotex core, polyester cover) in 3 to 14 mm.
  • Single braids: DX Core 78 (Dyneema SK78, 2.5 to 10 mm), DX Core 99 (Dyneema SK99, 2 to 6 mm), DX Core 78 HPS heat-set (3 to 8 mm) and S Core (Stirotex, 3 to 14 mm). Compare the DX Core 99 4 mm.
  • Dinghy lines: DX Trim, Dyneema SK78 core with a polyester cover in 2 to 6 mm, listed as a stiff, round line for halyards and control lines (4 mm); and the Dinghy Race Grip, a Dyneema SK78 and Cordura single braid in 4 to 10 mm for sheets and control lines, in the Dinghy collection (6 mm).
  • Elastic and shock cord: Elastic (latex and polyester, 3 to 10 mm) and S Shock (latex and Stirotex, 3 to 6 mm), listed for fixing toe straps, trapeze lines and sun or rain tents. See the S Shock 4 mm.
  • Docking: Dock lines in polyester double braid from 8 to 24 mm, and Eco-Dock in recycled polyester from 10 to 16 mm. Example: the 12 mm dock line.
  • Anchoring: Anchor lines in polyester 3-strand (8 to 16 mm) and polyester 8-strand (16 to 24 mm), the 8-strand listed for mooring lines, towing springs or anchor warps. Example: the 20 mm 8-strand.
  • Fenders: Fender lines in 10 and 12 mm polyester, as double-braid line by the foot or as pre-made single-braid fender lines.
  • Protection and finishing: chafe guards (protection covers in HD polyester, 16 to 56 mm), TN Cover sleeves (Technora and polyester blend, 5 to 14 mm, listed for jammers and clutches), whipping twine (1.0 to 1.4 mm, polyester or Stirotex), soft shackles with quick release (2 to 8 mm, 6 mm) and soft attachment loops, Dyneema loops in lengths from 10 to 50 cm.
Racing, Performance Cruise or Cruising: Which Build
  • Racing: the DX Cup is listed for racing halyards, sheets and control lines with minimal stretch. TN Racing adds a Technora polyester cover over a Stirotex core.
  • Performance Cruise: DX Performance puts a Dyneema SK38 core under a polyester cover. The listing says the cover grips at stoppers and passes load to the core, which suits halyards and sheets on a cruising boat that wants less stretch than polyester.
  • Cruising: Cruiser XTS is the polyester double braid for cruising halyards, sheets and control lines, with Solid, Grip Solid, Grip MX and Flecks versions in the same collection.
  • Single braid: no separate cover. The DX Core 99 listing recommends it for control lines and high-load applications and says SK99 has a 20% strength advantage over SK78. The Dinghy Race Grip listing says its single braid is easy to splice.

Product pages list breaking strength by diameter. Compare them on the page for the exact size, and size the line to the job and to the blocks, clutches and winches it runs through. The rope diameter and length guide and the Dyneema diameter guide walk through it.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is Premium Ropes line sold?
By the foot. Choose the product for your diameter and color, then order the number of feet you need. Pre-made fender lines, soft shackles and soft attachment loops are sold as finished pieces.

What is the difference between DX Cup and Cruiser XTS?
DX Cup has a Dyneema SK78 core and is listed for racing, with minimal stretch. Cruiser XTS is polyester double braid, listed for cruising halyards, sheets and control lines with low stretch. Between them sits DX Performance, with a Dyneema SK38 core.

When should I choose a single braid?
When you want a line with no separate cover, such as a control line. The DX Core 99 listing recommends SK99 single braid for control lines and high-load applications, and the Dinghy Race Grip listing says its single braid is easy to splice.

Which line do I use for docking and for anchoring?
Docking: polyester double braid dock lines from 8 to 24 mm, or Eco-Dock in recycled polyester from 10 to 16 mm. Anchoring: polyester 3-strand anchor line from 8 to 16 mm or polyester 8-strand from 16 to 24 mm.

How do I protect a line from chafe?
Slide a chafe guard over the line where it rubs: the protection covers run from 16 to 56 mm. For a halyard that works in a jammer or clutch, the TN Cover is the Technora and polyester sleeve listed for that job.
